[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2012.06.22 ~ 2012.06.24

HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2012.06.22 ~ 2012.06.24)

It's been a while since Park Cheol-kwan put out a film, with his last one being "Hi, Dharma" back in 2001. However, his return has been rewarded as his new film, "Miss Conspirator", has claimed the top stop in its opening weekend with 268,768 admissions. That narrowly nudged out Kim Dae-seung's "The Concubine" which was looking for its third straight week at the top. Park Cheol-kwan's latest is a action comedy and stars Go Hyun-jung, Yoo Hae-jin, Sung Dong-il and Lee Moon-sik. Viewers and critics alike are interested to see what Park has managed to produce with these talents on board.

The much talk about "The Concubine" just missed out on a third week at the top. Kim Dae-seung's erotic historical drama saw some 224,483 admissions this past weekend, placing the film on a total admissions count of 2,187,968. "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" follows closely on its heals with 219,377, which in turn was put under pressure by Jeong Seung-koo's "The Suck Up Project: Mr. XXX-Kisser" which had 213,947. "The King of XX-Kissing" is the second new Korean film that came out last week, and it marks director Jeong Seung-koo's directorial debut. Jeong Seung-koo was the assistant director of "Secret Sunshine" (2007) and was also involved in the production of the 2006 film "A Dirty Carnival".

"Everything about my Wife" falls a few places in the face of some new local releases, but the popular romantic comedy has accumulated a ticket count of 4,144,306 admissions, that's more than Lee Yong-ju's "Architecture 101", and places it just behind the highest grossing Korean film of 2012 "Nameless Gangster". The action heavy "Lockdown" is at number six with 87,591, followed by Shin Terra's "Runway Cop" which slips two places from last weekend to settle at seven.

The last three are all foreign films with "Men in Back 3" pulling 60,487 admissions, and the sci-fi epic "Prometheus" finds itself still failing to breach the million admissions mark here in Korea. The top ten is rounded out by Julien Magnat's "Faces in the Crowd" and that one stars Milla Jovovich and Julian McMahon.
