[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2012.07.06 ~ 2012.07.08

HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2012.07.06~ 2012.07.08)

Park Jeong-woo's "Deranged" is off to a flying start as its opening weekend draws in more than a million admissions. Park's pervious film was "Big Bang" back in 2007, but he has returned to the big screen with the support of Kim Myung-min, Moon Jeong-hee, Kim Dong-wan and Lee Hanee. The films follows Jae-hyeok (Kim Myung-min) as he seeks answer to a mysterious virus that has began to ravage the city's inhabitants. The weekend numbers were largely dominated by foreign entries, with Park's "Deranged" being the only Korean representative in the top six.

Last week's number one, "The Amazing Spider-Man", still managed to pull some 1,060,818 admissions. It was only narrowly outplayed by the 1,131,416 claimed by "Deranged". These two film together claimed more the 80% of the total ticket sales, leaving the rest to pick up the straps and they slugged it out at the top. First of these was the Japanese animation "A Letter to Momo" by director Hiroyuki Okiura, that claiming just 103,042. "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" followed suit at three and is currently sitting on a total admissions count of 1,545,314 since its release early last month.

At number five is the U.S film "The Raven", a mystery thriller tstarring John Cusack, Alice Eve and Luke Evans. "The Raven" attracted 66,238 (2.40%), which was just enough to trump Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" which sits on 61,953 (2.30%). Min Gyoo-don's "Everything about my Wife" slipped three places to settle at seven. "Everything about my Wife" is now just 167, 288 admissions short of becoming the highest grossing Korean film of the year, a title still held by "Nameless Gangster" which earned a whopping 4,683,598 admissions.

Kim Dae-seung's "The Concubine" saw the biggest drop in the face of a number of new releases. The film held second last week with 122,703 (5.20%), but was forced into eight with just 44,349 (1.60%). Kim Dae-seung's latest is currently on 2,569,393 admissions since it's release on June 6th. At number nine is Steven Soderbergh's "Haywire" with 26,785 (0.90%), followed by "The Cabin in the Woods" which drops five places with 20,854 (0.80%).
