[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2012.09.21 ~ 2012.09.23

The local flavors took the honors this past weekend with the top two films being Korean and claiming close to 70% of the ticket sales. With 1,192,689 admissions, Choo Chang-min's "Masquerade" secured another week as number one, jumping past "The Concubine" as the ninth highest grossing Korean film of the year. Choo's historical drama snatched 60.5% of the moviegoers with the new Korean film "Spy", Woo Min-ho's second feature film, slotting into second with 341,697.

The action comedy "Spy" was released last week and is off to a great start as it held second with 16.8% of the sales. The films stars Kim Myung-min, Yum Jung-ah, Yoo Hae-jin, Byun Hee-bong and is written and directed by Woo Min-ho. "Spy" is Woo's second film since "Man of Vendetta" in 2010. In light of Woo's second effort, "Resident Evil: Retribution" was forced to relinquish second place as it was bumped into third. This zombie carnage was followed the the U.S fantasy comedy "Ted", a story about a man whose childhood teddy comes alive. "Ted" opened its run at the Korean box office with 81,313 admissions (3.9%) over 301 screens.
The prolific filmmaker Kim Ki-duk's lasted film "Pieta" stumbled two place to find itself at number five with just 69,518 to its credit. "Pieta" has now collected 505,744 admissions since its release on the sixth. The Japanese animation "The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki" is next with 61 269, holding the same position it did last week despite finding itself 16,000 admissions lighter. On the verge of cracking the million admissions mark is "The Bourne Legacy" at number seven. Last week this latest "Bourne" film held forth with 135,953, but has been swiftly demoted to the less desirable end of the top ten.
Kim Hong-seon's "Traffickers" continues its descent with 36,518 admissions. The film came into the charts three weeks ago at number two, then fell to fifth and now sits at eighth. Still the film has accumulated 1,618,529 during that fall. "The Thieves" is, can you believe it, still around! It added 6,969 admissions and now boasts an incredible total 12,944,838 admissions. This week's top ten is rounded out by the 2010 U.S film "London Boulevard" staring Colin Farrell, Keira Knightley and Ray Winestone which walked away with just 6,735 admissions.
