Hong Wins Argentinean Award

Director Hong Sang-soo won the best director award for his 2006 film "Woman on the Beach" at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, the most renowned film festival in South America.

The jury for the Argentinean festival included Jay Jeon, deputy festival director and programmer for world cinema of the Pusan International Film Festival.

"Woman on the Beach", Hong's latest work, was released in Korea last year. It had already earned Hong an award for best director from the Director's Cut Award, which is decided by young film directors in South Korea. It was also invited to the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival.

Hong, whose films include "The Day a Pig Fell Into the Well" (1996) and "Woman is the Future of Man" (2004), has cultivated unique aesthetics out of mundane romances. While his films do not reap commercial success at home, they have received critical acclaim abroad.
