Stylish designer suits, expensive cars, tattoos all over, lots of money, and license to do anything as long as it benefits the "family" - judging from the Korean gangster films shown over the years, you'd think being a gangster was the best profession in the world. Gangster comedy Hotel M: Gangster's Last Draw presents a slightly different picture. After the family goes through some restructuring, Dae Haeng (Kim Suk Hoon, So Cute) and his associates are left with one last chance: extort a large sum of cash from the owners of a countryside hotel. But when spunky owner Min Ah (Kim Sung Eun, Strange Woman, Strange Man) finds out what their plan is, their life becomes hell on earth.

With its unique setup, Hotel M: Gangster's Last Draw stands out from recent efforts in the genre which usually focus on the same themes. And looking at director Choi Sung Cheol's resume, it's easy to see why. Director Choi was previously the assistant director for the super-hit My Sassy Girl and Kim Ha Neul's Too Beautiful to Lie, two irreverent comedies banking on interesting characters first, and genre conventions later. Kim Suk Hoon returns to films after 2004's So Cute, which marked a big change from his older roles in action films like Tube. Starring alongside him is Kim Sung Eun, who found stardom in the extremely popular KBS daily drama Strange Man, Strange Woman.

영화 <마강호텔>의 시작은 사소한 궁금증에서 시작되었다. “과연 조폭이 짤린다면 어떻게 될까?” 뉴스나 신문을 보면 심심치 않게 나오는 구조조정, 해고, 데모 등 크고 작은 사회의 사건 사고 속에 조폭이란 특수 계층은 과연 아무런 영향을 받지 않을까?
기존의 조폭 캐릭터들이 상대방에게 이유 없는 폭력을 휘두르는 거칠고 무식한 면을 보여줬다면 <마강호텔>의 형님들은 우수한 경영마인드와 합법적인 범위 안에서 움직이는 노동자(?)이다. 하지만 마른 하늘에 날벼락 같은 정리해고 통보를 받고 ‘4대보험 보장’, ‘비정규직 보호’ 등을 외치며 가두시위까지 하는 등 기본적인 생활 여건을 걱정하는 생계형 조폭 캐릭터들이 대거 등장해, 이제껏 봐왔던 기존의 조폭 코미디와는 확실한 차별화를 선언한다. 즉 조직간의 다툼으로 구조조정 당한 샐러리맨형 조폭은 기존의 영화에서 봐왔던 모습과 달리 새롭게 포지셔닝된 새로운 종의 캐릭터인 셈이다.

조직간 나와바리 다툼으로 구조조정을 당해 하루 아침에 갈 곳을 잃은 대행(김석훈 분) 일당. 이들이 조직의 자금 사정을 해결하고 일터로 복귀하기 위한 유일한 방법은 쓰러져 가는 ‘마강호텔’을 찾아가 미수금을 받아오는 것뿐이다! 하지만 형님들 특유의 단순 무식 영업방해작전으로 손쉽게 해결하려던 ‘떼인돈 회수 작전’은 시간이 지날수록 점차 미션 임파서블로 치닫게 된다.

조폭+호텔리어의 만남, 조직적 써비스로 형님처럼 모신다고라고라~?!

지방 변두리에 자리잡은 마강호텔의 여사장 민아(김성은 분), 연변출신 웨이트리스 정은(박희진 분), 지배인 중건(우현 분). 평범한 호텔리어로만 보이는 이들은 갑자기 쳐들어온 대행 일당을 만나자 무섭게 돌변하기 시작한다! 마강호텔의 수상쩍은 호텔리어들은 형님들의 마강호텔 접수 임무에 강력한 태클을 걸고, 결국 대행 일당은 대대적인 작전 변경을 단행, 호텔 역사상 유례없는 신개념 고객 써비스를 선보이기 시작한다.
