As a former member of South Korea's national dance team, Young-Sae exudes professionalism, refusing to get involved with the films beautiful heroine. But as their practices continue, a bond between the two soon develops, as she learns not only how to dance from Young Sae, but how to love as well. But what happens when the villainous Jeong Hyeon su (Yoon Chan) enters the picture and tries to break them apart? Will their budding romance survive?

Moon Geun Young, star of the hit romantic comedy My Little Bride, takes the lead role in Innocent Steps, a charming, although not wholly satisfying romantic comedy from director Park Young Hun. The teen idol plays Jang Chae Rin, an ethnic Korean living in China, who finds herself to be a complete fish out of water after being transplanted abroad to South Korea. When her sister bows out of a dummy marriage to a champion dance instructor, Chae Rin decides to travel to Seoul herself and impersonate her sister. Once in South Korea, she meets Na Young Sae (Park Geon Hyeong), who has agreed to the sham marriage for the sole purpose of locating a new dance partner. It seems he's looking to replace the one he lost to his rival, the dastardly Jeong Hyeon Su (Yoon Chan). But when Chae Rin's secret and her lack of dancing experience is revealed, Young Sae wants to send his new bride back, but eventually, he has second thoughts and decides that his only hope is to train this wide-eyed novice himself. Of course, the practices start off as purely professional, but as Chae Rin begins to dedicate herself to the art of dancing, a connection between the newlyweds begins to take shape. Chae Rin's youthful exuberance and folksy way of speaking eventually charms Young Sae's hardened heart. There's even an amusing subplot about two immigration officers seeking to expose the couple's secret, while eventually rooting for the two to stay together. However, all that funny business comes to a close about an hour into the proceedings. Oddly enough, things take a dark turn in the film's final act when Young Sae's old nemesis returns to turn his world upside down. It turns out that things aren't quite what they seem. As a result, the couple gets broken apart, and Young Sae suffers a devastating loss. Can there possibly be a happy ending for these two? Well, yes. Innocent Steps is a romantic comedy after all. However, the lack of a more traditional rousing ending makes the film a mixed bag to say the least. Although it may seem strange to suggest it, this is the one case in which the story would have benefited from actually sticking with genre conventions. From the very beginning, the type of relationships and conflicts depicted in the film seem to fall in line with the typical romance. Although it's commendable that the filmmakers decided to break from tradition toward the story's end, it's important to realize that formulas work for a reason. For Innocent Steps to depart from that tried-and-true method after about an hour of fantastic build-up ends up subverting expectations in a way that the audience will neither understand nor appreciate. It just doesn't make sense for a film that is so clearly a romantic fantasy to suddenly become gritty and realistic. Who wants to see a romance in which bad deeds go unpunished, and the good people must simply make do with their circumstances? Even if love prevails, it does not conquer all. And thus, what you have in the end is something that's a comedy in neither the contemporary nor Shakespearean sense. Even so, much of the film is a joy to watch in no small part due to the performance of Moon Geun Young. Her character is cute, to be sure, but not in a saccharine sweet kind of way. Her performance creates a curious balance between youthful exuberance and a kind of restrained maturity, especially in her more serious scenes with co-star Park Geon Hyeong. Yes, the initial portions of the film are formulaic and predictable, but the chemistry between the two leads wins out. The film's final act does detract from the experience, but the goodwill the film has earned in the early goings carries all the way through to the finale. Even with all the darkness, there's quite a bit of light at the end. As they say, all's well that ends well. It's just too bad Innocent Steps didn't end a little better. By Calvin McMillin |

| How does moon geun young do it!! In every movie she does she is able to capture the right mood and emotions of the character. Innocent steps is no difference, moon geun young plays a woman in desperate need of money, and she becomes a dancer. Park gun hyung teaches her to dance, and although at first they do not quite click, they eventually fall in love. Good ending and definitely seems to have put some time into the dancing and choreography. a must see for mgy fans!! 10/10 |

| This is a more than excellent film. It is a bittersweet romantic movie. The storyline is well written, and a good length for a movie. I have watched this over and over again. Having watched the Korean version (with English subtitles) and the Cantonese dubbed version, obviously the Korean version is better, but the Cantonese version is well translated. This DVD version also comes with extras, such as a movie gallery, the trailer and behind the scenes filming. It is really worth getting this and it is worth every penny. The actors/actresses are really good....Moon Guen Young played the innocent Chae-ryn to perfection, and Park Gun Hyung was great as the protective guy Young-sae! The soundtrack to this film was well conducted and made the film that much more emotional to watch. Every tune made every scene tug at one's heartstrings. I definitely rate this a special kind of film, and I will keep this in my movie collection forever. |

This is one of the best romantic films I have ever seen. It is a bittersweet love story, and Moon Geun Young depicted the character in the most innocent way. It is a movie full of emotion, and enough to tug at anyone's heart. I watched this film 5 times on a 13 hour plane journey and cried over 5 times. The film has a very good ending. It is well written and devised. I would really recommend this and hope it becomes an international hit. It is the first time I have seen Park Gun Hyung's films and I really liked his acting...he came across as the protective guy, which any girl in this world would feel secure with. I particularly liked the soundtrack and the dance scenes, which were captivating. I have seen a few dance movies such as Dirty Dancing (american) and Strictly Ballroom (australian), but the feeling that this Korean movie leaves with me cannot be felt in those films. In some way, this film leaves me with the feeling of hope for what lies ahead in the future, and although the movie did make me weep, it left me with the feeling of complete happiness at the end of it. |
