There are certain patterns and conventions to Korean dramas that even casual fans of the form can easily recognize, but once in a while a drama comes along that doesn't quite fit into the picture. MBC's 2004 drama Ireland may have found only moderate viewership ratings during its broadcast, but it attracted a very dedicated following and great acclaim for its quirky characters, frank depiction, and memorable dialogue. Clearly a bit different from the rest, this creative character-driven drama about four lonely souls neatly avoids all melodramatic expectations by focusing on people, conversations, musings, moments, images. Another great draw of the drama is of course the talented all-star cast consisting of Lee Na Young (Ruler of Your Own World), Hyun Bin (My Lovely Sam-Soon), Kim Min Joon (Damo), and Kim Min Jung (Fashion 70s).
Raised in Ireland by an adopted family, Lee Jung Ah (Lee Na Young) returns to her native South Korea after the death of her family members. The emotionally unstable Jung Ah blames herself for her family's deaths, and has been thinking about suicide. Is she going to Korea to find her real family, or to drown herself in the Han River? She's not quite sure herself. In Korea, she meets Kang Guk (Hyun Bin), a lonely, kind-hearted bodyguard whose strong sense of righteousness only brings him trouble; Jae Bok (Kim Min Joon), an apathetic, unemployed drifter with an unusually clear mind; and Han Shi Yeon (Kim Min Jung), a tough-talking actress who does soft porn to support her family. When these four people cross paths, what results is tears, laughter, romance, and a little something called life.
