Kim Yu-na Named This Year's Sports Hero

Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-na has been named the sports hero for 2016, the Korean Olympic Committee said on Tuesday.

The KOC has selected sports heroes every year since 2011 to honor athletes who promoted Korea with their achievements.

The KOC's selection committee receives recommendations from the public and sports organizations. Of the 54 candidates, the final six are selected through evaluations and popular vote.

This year's finalists included Kim, football legend Cha Bum-kun, the late wrestler Kim Il, the late journalist Lee Kil-yong, Pak Se-ri and Park Chan-ho.
