The hottest issues in the content industry are Director James Cameron's Avatar, Nintendo's Wii and Apple's iPhone. What all of these have in common is that they emphasize feeling, experience and emotions as the trends of future technology by offering new experiences and services to users.
KOCCA launches 14.3 billion won public project to develop next-generation content technology in order to nurture the future content industry and produce world-class contents
To nurture the future content industry, which is centered on the three keywords of feeling, experience and emotions, and to produce world-class contents, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Yu In-chon) and the Korea Creative Content Agency (President & CEO: Lee Jae-woong) are setting up the 2010 Content Industry Technology Support Project (designated participants), worth 12.3 billion won, and the Culture Technology Joint Research Center Project, worth 2 billion won.
The projects focus not only on technology development for content production by actively reflecting global market trends in feeling, experience and emotions, but also on research about services to heighten content value. With the greater emphasis on emotion-related research in particular, emotion measurement and standardized technology development for the functional evaluation of contents will be addressed for the first time.
In video and new media, technology development will concentrate on 2D-to-3D conversion and real-time processing of 3D image acquisition, correction and composition. The video sector aims to dominate the global market after 2012 when the full-scale digital broadcasting and 3D films are introduced in full swing.
The game industry will receive support in the field of next-generation game technology development - including experiential games based on motion detection and 3D spatial recognition, and serious games for education, training and therapy. The domestic game market, which has revolved around online games, is expected to see more diverse contents accompanied by support for experiential games.
In the creation, performance and exhibition sector, technology development for large-scale digilog performances and exhibitions, such as storytelling authoring tool development, and experiential working model and wire flying system development, will be carried out. The newly established service R&D field will pursue real-time emotion analysis and sharing of technology development for new business models and customized content services so as to enhance content value.
Nurture CT Joint Research Center as key research center
Meanwhile, the existing CT Research Center Fostering Project has been upgraded in terms of its funding period and amount to become the CT Joint Research Center Project. The list of eligible candidates has been extended from university research institutes to include culture-related local governments, content promotion agencies, research institutes and companies. The project aims to contribute to the growth of the content industry by fostering each region's specialized interests and merging regional content production with technology.
Market domination and home-grown technology development expected
Through the 2010 Content Industry Technology Support Project (designated participants) and the CT Joint Research Center Project, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency aim to shorten the lag in Korea's culture technology standards from 3~5 years to 1~3 years.
In addition, the Korea Creative Content Agency will hold a project briefing for the general public and executives from the related industries.
