Korean animation is gaining more and more the world's attention.
The Korea Culture & Content Agency (KOCCA, CEO: Suh, Byoung-moon) announced on April 20 that, according to the mid-term report, Korean animation companies earned 64.94 million dollars from consultation and 20.44 million dollars from contracts at MIPTV 2006, a visual content exhibition held in France.
Compared with the earnings of 46.21 million dollars from consultation and 13.04 million dollars from contracts last year, this year's figures represent an increase of 40.5 and 56.7 percent, respectively.
First, Sieun Design's Western Macaroni, which had been promoted to make a contract via the European Office of KOCCA since its first introduction to MIPTV last year, attracted everyone's attention when its producer sealed a contract worth 7 million dollars (about 6.6 billion Korean won) with CNR Kids, a distribution company in the Netherlands.
In addition, Hanho Heung-Up Co., Ltd., producer of My Dear Diagoro, closed a coproduction deal with Planet Nemo, a French production company, worth about 1 million dollars (about 940 million Korean won), while Janggeum's Dream by Pixtrend Inc. was sold to countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
Furthermore, Sunwoo Entertainment Inc., producer of Mix Master, last year's "Star Project", sealed a licensing contract with local distributors in Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Thailand, while Dibo The Gift Dinosaur producer Ocon is also in close talks with distributors in the USA, England, France, Taiwan, and Singapore.
"The reason why the world's attitude toward Korean animation has changed is not only because of Korea's growing expertise and renown in planning and producing its own animation, but also because we have consistently promoted our business via the global network", said Lee, Sang-gil, director of KOCCA Industries Promotion Division. "We will continue to support KOCCA's four oversea offices so as to enhance their functions".
