As Korean cinema draws a wider appeal among moviegoers both at home and abroad it is easy to assume that there are more productions getting off the ground, but ironically that was hardly the case during the first six months of this year.
According to the Korea Media Rating Board, a total of 47 domestic films were rated from January to June, which is a drop of 18 films from the same period last year and breaks the moviemaking momentum, which has been going on since 2000.
Movie industry insiders say there were fewer productions because of an ongoing trend for the blockbuster, Tinsel town-style movies, in addition to a persisting slump in productions for video-only releases.
