In other news today -- Korean movies are gaining wider recognition abroad from both critics and audiences.
Kim Hyung-eun reports on how Korean directors and actors are being received in Europe.
Korean director
Kim Ki-duk's "
The Bow", will be screened across Italy starting Friday. This, after Kim was chosen to receive the country's renowned Vittorio de Sica Film Award. The screening committee praised Kim as the best film director representing the Far East. Born in 1960, Kim studied fine arts in Paris in early 1990s, and received Best Director awards last year at two festivals for two different films: one at the Berlin International Film Festival for "
Samaria" - "Samaritan Girl", and in Venice for "
3-Iron".
Korean films drew praise also in Spain. At the Stages International Film Festival of Catalonia 2005, Korean actress
Lee Young-ae won the Best Actress award for her role in "
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance". The film, which was invited to the Venice Film Festival earlier, is about a young woman's elaborate plot to get even after spending 13 years in prison for the murder she did not commit. Also at the Stages, Korea's "
Antarctic Journal" by
Lim Pil-seong took the Best Feature Film Award, while another Korean film, "
A Bittersweet Life" won for the Best Original Soundtrack.
