Korean in the Coke Ad Speaks Out

A Korean beat 599 rivals to become the model for Coca Cola's new Asia-wide TV commercial, which has been aired in 30 countries from March 1. Hwang Jun-ha won at auditions held in France, Britain, the U.S. and Spain. Hwang appears as a student buying a Coke from a vending machine.

"There were so many competitors that I didn't expect I would be chosen", he said during a recent visit to Korea. "After modeling for a multinational company, I gained the self-confidence to say that I can do anything".

A student in the U.K., Hwang has been interested in acting and film since childhood, inspired by Jackie Chan movies. At first, his parents were less than impressed. But since he starred in the Coke commercial, his mother has changed her attitude and started to support him, he said. Hwang moved to the U.K. when he was in elementary school and now has British passport.

In his secondary school days, he worked as an extra in ads and movies and now studies film and drama at college. Hwang hopes to sign up with a British agency and perhaps get a part in a British TV soap.

"British people never used to know where Korea is", he says. "But now they are interested in Korea thanks to Korean soccer players playing in the Premier League, like Park Ji-sung and Seol Ki-hyun". Hwang, too, reveals he would like to act as a kind of cultural ambassador for Korea.
