Korean Movies Enjoy Popularity in Cannes

The horror movie "Apartment" by director Ahn Byeong-ki and the movie "Beast", starring Kwon Sang-woo and Yoo Ji-tae, have been sold for a high price at the Cannes market (Marche du Film), which is being held concurrently with the Cannes Film Festival in France. According to Miro Vision, which is in charge of the overseas marketing for "Apartment" (produced by Toilet Pictures and Movie World), the movie was sold to the Japanese film production company Happy Net for slightly less than the US$3 million received for another horror movie, "Bunshinsaba".

"Apartment" was sold even before the movie's script was released, attesting to the customer's trust in director Ahn Byeong-ki and also due in large part to the unique plot of the cartoon on which the movie is based. Ahn has been riding high on his popularity in Japan recently due to his previous movies, "Ring" and "Bunshinsaba".

"Apartment", which is based on the same-titled cartoon by Kang Full, is a horror movie about a young man living in a shabby apartment in the Seoul suburbs. One day when he observes lights in an apartment across the street being turned off during a housewarming party, he gets thrown into a series of horrible events.

"Beast" (Popcorn Film) was also sold for a high price to the Japanese company Amuse Entertainment, according to Show Box. It became the third most expensive movie to be exported overseas after Spring Days and "Duelist".

Aside from that, the Korean movie "The People" was sold to CIPA, which had previously distributed the movie "A Good Lawyer's Wife" to France. "The People" opens in France in October. "Blood Rain" by director Kim Dae-seung was sold to the British company Tartan Film.

Meanwhile, "April Snow", starring Bae Yong-joon, became the first Korean melodrama movie to be exported to Europe. ShowEast said it had signed a contract with the French firm Pretty Pictures even before the filming of the movie was finished.
