Korean Musicals Enter Japan

Korean-made musicals are making it into the Japanese market. The pioneering musical of the new Korean wave is "Jewel in the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum"), based on a TV hit drama. Adapted into a play by a Japanese theater group, "Jewel in the Palace" will debut in Tokyo this December and in Nagoya next February. The female lead Janggeum will be played by Japanese actress Rei Kikukawa. The original TV drama "Jewel in the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum") was aired on Japanese cable and terrestrial channels in 2004.

Producers of another Korean musical, "Dalgona", are about to sign an export contract with a Japanese production company. Having debuted in Korea in 2004, the musical "Dalgona" is composed of Korean golden oldies from the 70s and the 80s. The musical will feature Japanese songs and will be adapted to suit Japanese culture before it is presented on the Tokyo stage in September.
