South Korean studio major, CJ Entertainment, has signed a pact with art house and indie specialists, Fortissimo Films – a multi-national sales and financing company known for representing and often producing top-tier quality Asian films such as WONG Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love.

The new partnership will allow CJ access to Fortissimo's high profile catalogue for distribution on CJ's varied digital media platforms and television networks. CJ will also get first-look rights to distribute upcoming Fortissimo projects in its theaters and ancillary outlets.

For Fortissimo, the deal signifies assurance that its art house and indie fare will be distributed in Korea – a large but hard-to-access market crowded out by local and US studio films. The deal also opens up negotiations to co-finance and produce future Asian-themed projects.

There is no announcement yet on which Fortissimo-represented film will screen in Korea via the deal, but the company is currently selling rights...| More

PIFF's Record Ticket Sales

With the opening of Pusan International Film Festival's box office on Sept. 23, nearly half the general screenings have sold out. Of the record 355 films in the program, 159 sold out in less than an hour. Quickest to go was the Guest Visit screening of "I Come With the Rain", starring Korea's top star LEE Byeong-heon, selling out in just 38 seconds.

JANG Jin's "Good Morning President", the opening film, screened each year at the 5000-seat outdoor theater at the Busan Yachting Center, sold out in 1 minute and 16 seconds. Other quick sellers were "Air Doll", starring BAE Doona, and Japanese actor YAKUSHO Koji's directing debut "Toad's Oil".

For those who weren't fast enough, don't dismay. 20% of total tickets will be available at Temporary Box Offices open at screening venues during the festival period. KOFIC's Quartely "Korea Cinema Today" just Published

The Pucheon International Fantastic Film Festival(PiFan) edition of KOFIC's quarterly Korean Cinema Today magazine, has just been published. With the title 'Expand the Market Expand the Views' this edition focuses on international co productions and international Korean film business.

The title article in particular looks at successful co production and cinematic international changes with the Asia region. In terms of investment, Ellen KIM details issues of co production financing in Investment and Production Environment of Korean Films. As a particular case study, in Working with New Zealand LEE Nam-jin revisits the current state of cinematic play between New Zealand/Korea and their barely 1 year old Film Co-production Treaty.
