Korean movie "Thirst" and "Mother - 2009" [CJ Entertainment]

Some of the biggest names in the South Korean film industry, as well as its most noted productions, have been nominated in multiple categories at this year's Hollywood-based Green Globe Film Awards.

According to the event's official webpage, a number of Korea's top movie stars and films will compete in this year's "International Film Awards Theme: Asia" segment of the event which recognizes movies, actors and directors in the Eastern region of the globe.

Noteworthy nominees include Song Kang-ho for film "Thirst", Ha Jeong-woo for "Take Off" and Kim Myeong-min for "Closer to Heaven" in the category for best international actor...More

Lee Joon-ki to star in new TV series "Faith"

Hallyu star Lee Joon-ki in his previous TV series "Hero - Drama" [MBC]

Korean actor Lee Joon-ki will star in an upcoming historical drama tentatively titled "Faith" in English, according to his agency on Friday.

The actor will play the male lead in the drama, playing a young student of Eastern medicine who grows up be a legendary doctor during the Koryo Period.

The series will be helmed by famed Korean director Kim Jong-hak, who is known for his blockbuster scale dramas such as "The Legend" (MBC, 2007), which starred top actor Bae Yong-joon, and "Sandglass" (SBS, 1995), which scored the highest viewership ratings in local television history....More

Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo, who played Joon-sang and Yu-jin in the 2002 KBS drama "Winter Sonata", will reunite to play the same roles after a break of seven years.

The two stars have provided voice-overs as Joon-sang and Yu-jin for the Japanese animation "Winter Sonata", which aired for 15 episodes on SKY PerfecTV. They will make actual appearances in the final scene of the final episode.

This is the 10th in a 60-part series featuring 60

major events in Korea's modern history from 1884 till now. The project is part of the 60th anniversary of The Korea Times, which falls on Nov.1.

For South Korea, the last three years of the millennium would produce a parade of unthinkables.

At the end of 1997, a regional economic tsunami had threatened to swamp the achievements of the previous three decades.

Unemployment arrived in Korea, but by the end of 1998, the banks appeared to have

stabilized: Was the crisis over? No. In 1999, Daewoo Group, considered "too-big-to-fail", collapsed under debts of $80 billion. A second financial crisis cut a swath through the investment trust sector.

Things looked more promising politically. Kim Dae-jung won the presidency at the end of 1997, the first opposition politician to reach the Blue House.

His brave new "Sunshine Policy" of engagement with North Korea bore its first fruit in 1998, when a joint North-South tourism resort opened, marking the first time since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War that large numbers of South Korean citizens could tread on northern soil.

And in cinemas, in 1999, Koreans were flocking to a very new kind of movie.

Across the globe, economic and political pundits studied and debated the former incidents, but such debate was nothing new: The Korean Peninsula had been telling an economic story since the late 1960s, and a political one since 1950.

What was new and surprising was the film, for it would lead a pop-culture renaissance that would win Korea previously un-reached audiences across Asia and beyond. For the first time in its history, South Korea -- a nation whose brand had been defined by war and by generals; by metal-bashing factories and ruthless businessmen; by violent rioters and dour, economic shock troops -- would be seen as cool.

Korean actress Choi Ji-woo will be visiting the Kingdom of Swaziland in South Africa to lend a helping hand to the less fortunate.

Documentary producer With Culture explained in a press release that Choi traveled to Swaziland for a week-long stay starting Tuesday to help install a hand pump as part of her effort to help children undergoing difficulties in the drought-stricken region....More
