[HanCinema's Film Review] "Address Unknown" 2014/08/22,
The year is 1970, the location a small Korean town on the southern side of the demilitarized zone. A bunch of bleak looking fields abound in the area, and they look equally dreary in all seasons. The main sources of economic activity are the American military base and the dog meat butchery. Adults ruminate about how wonderful it was back when the war was going on, and their lives had some sort of actual purpose. American soldiers constantly practice their army crawls in anticipation of a northern invasion. The last bit comes off as particularly absurd. Why would the North Koreans want to invade a miserable place like this? And why would the Americans care if they did?,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Way Back Home" 2013/12/27,
Husband Jong-Bae (played by Ko Soo), wife Jeong-Yeon (played by Jeon Do-yeon), and daughter Hye-Rin (played by Kang Ji-woo) are for the most part a normal family with typical modest ambitions. They're thrust into a rather awful situation when a good deed for a friend is swiftly unexpectedly punished. Left with no other apparent way to preserve the family, Jeong-Yeon decides to steal a piece of bread.
Not literally, of course. But that's very much the tone "Way Back Home" sets, as the punishment the family receives first for a good deed, then a bad one, is horribly disproportionate to the provoking action,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "Suspect X" (aka "Perfect Number") 2013/06/22,
It's hard to cast a sympathetic light on a psychopathic killer, let alone keep it lit. In Bang Eun-jin's "Suspect X" (2012, aka "Perfect Number") Ryoo Seung-beom was the subject of that searchlight, playing a mild-mannered analytical genius/creepy stalker. The film was adapted from the Japanese novel "The Devotion of Suspect X" (2005), and marks the third instalment in Keigo Higashino's "Detective Galileo" series. In it Seung-beom plays Seok-go, a cunning voyeur who is infatuated with his beautiful neighbour Hwa-seon (Lee Yo-won). That fantasy of love quickly twists into a calculated invention when he hears murder through the walls one night,...More
