[HanCinema's Film Review] "Seoul Searching" 2016/07/24, "Seoul Searching" is a John Hughes-esque teenage romcom that evolves through its one hour and forty-five minute runtime. Director and writer Benson Lee, who based the story on his own experiences in a 1986 Korean summer camp, serves up characters in the forms of teenage stereotypes that gradually take on individual personalities. The cast is made up of fresh-faced ethnic Korean actors from all over the world such as Korean-German Teo Yoo as Klaus and Korean-Spanish Esteban Ahn as Sergio. Joining them are Korean-American Justin Chon (Twilight, "Dramaworld"), Korean veteran actor Cha In-pyo, budding actress Kang Byeol ("God's Gift - 14 Days", "The Rooftop Prince"), and Korean-American Jessika Van (MTV's Awkward). The disparate cast, although all of Korean heritage, reflects the core theme of the film, which is self-discovery. It is their mutual Korean heritage that brings them together, but their experiences that keep them that way. Welcome a film that sends a universal message of teenage loneliness via culture clash that results in human growth and understanding,...More
[Orion's Drama News] The Weight of Representation 2016/07/02,
It is time for some much hyped dramas to make an entrance and two of them are premiering this week. Before getting to that, however I will take a first look at "Incarnation of Jealousy" and its fresh material. I will also give my two cents on an upcoming series and its potential casting which I find highly problematic. Closing this piece are the usual upcoming drama goodies and followed shows,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "My Boy" 2014/04/26,
I-cheon (played by Lee Seok-cheol) is a fairly typical surly teenager. He's rude to everyone, including his younger brother Yoo-cheon (played by Jo Wang-byeol). The opening portion of "My Boy" immerses the viewer in this adolescent environment. I-cheon isn't a particularly likable young man. He doesn't even have any kind of rebellious charm. The older boy's just a jerk in the making, and there's no apparent impetus to help him change his attitude. Just the awkwardness of everyday life.
Then Yoo-cheon gets sick, and I-cheon's angry, disaffected attitude takes a troubling turn. His life is no less purposeless. There's still no hope on the horizon to change I-cheon's attitude,...More

Are Korea billboard ads effective? 2012/07/14, Source,
An advertisement for "Arirang", a traditional Korean folk song, covers the largest electronic display board in Times Square at the center of New York City. The 30-second advertisement titled "Do you hear?" started airing on July 3 and will be aired 50 times a day for one month. / Yonhap
By Jane Han NEW YORK ― Times Square's glittering spectacle of lights, neon signs and a chaotic bustle make it one of the busiest places on earth. And starting last Wednesday, in the heart of this glitzy spot, a giant digital billboard began playing an advertisement promoting Korea's traditional folksong "Arirang". Interesting ― but how many of the 500,000 people who go through Times Square every day care, or better yet, understand what the 30-second ad is trying to say? The commercial, titled "Do You Hear?" features fast-moving still-cut images of Korean men and women wearing traditional hanbok, followed by the faces of celebrities Cha In-pyo, Park Chan-ho and Ahn Sung-ki, and ends with the caption "Arirang. It is the folk anthem of Korea,...More

"SBS TV series 'Daemul - Big Thing' bothers you, right?" This was the first question the production team for KBS drama "President" received at a press conference held ahead of the drama's premiere on December 15. It was not that hard to guess that question would come up sooner or later. After all, both dramas are about politics with both main characters striving to become presidents and to top it off, they will air on same day and time slot. This practically stole attention to the fact that it will be the first time in 19 years that actor Choi Soo-jong and actress Ha Hee-ra, married in real life, have come together as couple in the upcoming show as well, as president and the first lady, to be more precise. But Choi, who will play the role of Jang Il-joon assures that the two dramas "are entirely different dramas". So how will the two differ? "Daemul - Big Thing" versus "President" and President Seo Hye-rim (Ko Hyeon-jeong) versus President Jang Il-joon. Which candidate gets chosen will be up to the voters, no, the TV viewers,...More
