[HanCinema's Film Review] "Life Risking Romance" 2017/07/15,
Je-in (played by Ha Ji-won) is a murder mystery writer who has been on a long slump. The main reason behind said slump is that Je-in is for some neurotic reason completely obsessed with ferreting out largely imaginary murders in the real world, a task in which her beleaguered best friend policeman Rok-hwan (played by Cheon Jeong-myeong) reluctantly assists, to his scorn in the department. The plot in "Life Risking Romance" kicks off when Je-in finally notices that there is, in fact, a real-life serial killer currently operating in Itaewon and maybe she should investigate that instead. For research material, of course,...More

Park Jeong-woo's thriller "Pandora" retained pole position during its second weekend out by capturing 42.8% of the sales; the film, Park's fourth after "Dance With The Wind", "Big Bang", and "Deranged", added a million admissions to move its total tally now to 3.1 million, or $20.9 million. The film's release is timely given the recent political unrest in the country, which led Maggie Lee, Variety's Chief Asia Film Critic, to write that, "Korean audiences will surely wonder how the lines between parody, fiction, and reality are blurred".,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" 2016/07/16,
Korean revenge dramas are a popular genre and some diversity would be a good idea. This is what the creators of "Master - God of Noodles" must have thought when they chose which work to adapt, because revenge by noodles is certainly new. The series is stylish and dark, its characters are many and interesting and its villain is terrifying. At the same time, it is constrained by its medium,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 20 Final 2016/07/01,
All humans long for freedom and control, but what makes each of us different is how far we are willing to go and how much we are willing to sacrifice for them. Unlike everyone around him, Gil-do knows no limits. At the same time, part of him seems to understand that they need to exist. It is this last crumb of humanity which brings things to an end for "Master - God of Noodles", but it is kindness which shapes the future,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 19 2016/06/30,
It is a time of revenge, realization and loss in the penultimate episode of "Master - God of Noodles". Gil-do is faced with the mistakes he has made and the lives he has ruined when a bigger evil than him exercises control he himself never had. Myeong's successes make him dangerously greedy and blind him to the dangers around him as they did Gil-do. There are always victims in games of power and those are rarely the ones who play these games,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 18 2016/06/24, "Master - God of Noodles" has often proved my doubts misplaced and it is the mark of a solid work when the viewer loves being wrong. Gil-do witnesses his lifelines being severed one by one and those who abandon him are about to discover how lacking they are in taming this beast. The time has come for Myeong to confront it, but this confrontation is anticlimactic. Thankfully the series has enough strong characters and a large web of revenge making an impact when Myeong's personal story fails to,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 17 2016/06/22,
People tend to reveal different sides of them when placed at extremes. A person with nothing to lose or one who feels like they own the world will let their guard down and charge blindly forward. This behavior puts our heroes at risk and it brings out the worst in those who will crush others for their goals. At this point in "Master - God of Noodles", anything goes. Lives might be lost and all truths will be revealed as we enter the final stretch,...More

Episode fifteen of "Master - God of Noodles" is one of revelations and direct confrontations. [HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 14 2016/06/10,
If my brain had a mouth it would scream, because episode fourteen of "Master - God of Noodles" is so heavy on new, resurfacing and conflicting information that it becomes borderline messy. The fight over Goongrakwon is ongoing, but new challenges arise. Gil-do's wickedness escalates and Da-hae is his new victim. Myeong, Tae-ha and Yeo-gyeong need to communicate better and perhaps take lessons for it from Congressman So, who stops beating around the bush and faces Gil-do head on,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 13 2016/06/08,
The past in "Master - God of Noodles" is kind of like Gil-do; you never know when it will come back and bite you. The killer of Da-hae's mother is revealed and obviously becomes the episode's highlight, while Yeo-gyeong makes the mother of all discoveries. In less dramatic developments, the formed love lines get a little boost and the cooking competition is resolved. Also, Congressman So Tae-seop adds to the pile of sass directed at Gil-do's fragile facade,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 12 2016/06/02,
Dramas rarely answer my prayers so quickly, but that makes the times when they do all the more satisfying. Gil-do is back in action and he is as nasty as ever. Between his resurfaced murderous intent for his father-in-law and everyone else's claws reaching for Goongrakwon, this episode is a merciless shot of suspense. Kang-sook's and Mi-ja's battle intensifies, future conflict between Myeong and Tae-ha is brewing and Gil-do's past pushes him one step closer to ruin,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 11 2016/06/02,
It is a time for reunions in today's episode of "Master - God of Noodles", most of which are less than happy for either party. Yeo-gyeong's perseverance brings Gil-do to her workplace and Congressman So is using her and Myeong to meet his old enemy as well. Kang-sook's and Mi-ja's battle over Goongrakwon is about to hit a very decisive moment. The more our characters' motivations and methods clash, the more dangerous things become for our heroes,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 10 2016/05/27,
We have now hit the midpoint in "Master - God of Noodles" and all of our players are in place, fully ready and motivated to close in on Gil-do and destroy him. Episode ten surprises me in some very pleasant ways, pleasant surprises being a rarity for me in drama. [HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 8 2016/05/20,
The convenient workings of fate thankfully take a break in episode eight of "Master - God of Noodles" and we are back to character focus after another three-year time jump. [HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 7 2016/05/19,
Fate is a very prominent concept in Korean drama and we all know how good it is in making things happen without the need for a logical path leading to them. "Master - God of Noodles" has used fate in plausible ways, but episode seven crosses some limits I wish it hadn't. Fate-coated writing hiccups aside, the episode gives us some juicy revelations, new players for our backstabbing chessboard, plenty of suspense and material for the future,...More

[HanCinema's Drama Preview] "Master - God of Noodles" 2016/04/23,
Revenge has been taken in all manner of ways in a genre very favored by Korean drama. The basics of these premises remain very similar, something which sadly extends to their entire plots sometimes. Worry not, however, because a new type of revenge has arrived. An apron is his cape and a rolling pin his weapon. It sounds funny, but do not underestimate "Master - God of Noodles",...More

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Heart to Heart" 2015/03/21,
For all the variety and expansion of genres that the last few years have developed in Korean drama, romantic comedy is one which has suffered due to those changes. What used to be stereotypical, but also simple stories has given way to convoluted plots and dwindling comedy. "Heart to Heart", however, stands out as an old-school rom-com with a modern approach. Sadly, it is also a reminder that trends usually have their way by the end,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Reset" 2014/11/01,
OCN's crime shows have so far been mostly a combination of procedurals and a main story. This has had its good points and bad, a good one being that things never got boring with case after case, a bad one being that the main plot of things was usually too superficial and stretched out. "Reset" focusing solely on the main story was a bold move. The question is, did it pay off? Given this was a new approach for the station, the answer would be somewhat. The show has a lot of problems, but it is a worthy attempt at what it tried to do,...More
[HanCinema's Drama First Look] "Reset" 2014/09/20,
Those familiar with OCN's series know that the channel is not one to break formula in any major ways. While its shows are very different to the usual Korean drama, they are still very much limited by a different type of mold that the channel has created for itself. Some of its series have changed things up, but usually in minor ways not related to the basic setup. This is where "Reset" and its different structure come in,...More
[HanCinema's Box Office Review] 2013.10.18 ~ 2013.10.20 2013/10/21,
The sci-fi thriller "Gravity" has struck the Korean box office to become the first foreign film to take gold since "Now You See Me" back in August. Alfonso Cuarón's spacey drama snatched 45% (714,419 admissions) of the total ticket sales to outplay last week's number one "Hwayi : A Monster Boy" by some margin. "Gravity" (which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney) has already made $284M worldwide and its international popularity managed to secure foothold for it in the Korean market. Jang Joon-hwan's action thriller "Hwayi" scoped up 365,175 (18.8%) over 552 screens to advance its total now to just under 2 million admissions, while two new Korean entries ("Fasten Your Seatbelt" and "Queen of the Night") quietly crept into fourth and fifth respectfully with less than 300,000 stubs between them,...More

[2010 10Asia's Awards] "Thank You" List 2010/12/31, Source, There are things that cannot be expressed through annual awards ceremonies. The big trophies are not enough to describe the gratitude we feel for the dramas that contributed to brightening our days during the past year. This is why 10Asia is presenting the "Thank You" list in which we selected 10 memorable dramas. This is a shout-out to all those dramas that at time melted our hearts with highly appealing looks, made our hands and feet cringe yet leave our eyes and mouths smiling with famous lines, delighted us at the mere sight of some characters and left the single viewers green with jealously with the romance scenes. Let us thank all these dramas that took our emotions on a most exciting roller coaster ride. So thank you! Eye-Cleanser of the YearKBS2 TV "Sungkyunkwan Scandal": Jalgeum Quartet

One would have thought that it was the long-awaited and much-anticipated kiss between the show's main female and male character, but it was actually the charming Hyo-seon (played by Seo Woo) planting a thank-you kiss on a servant grandmother and a maiden for giving her vegetables without her mother knowing about it. [INTERVIEW] Actress Seo Woo - Part 2 2010/04/28, Source,
Actress Seo Woo [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]
10: The atmosphere on set for "Cinderella's Sister" must be quite different since there are several other actors your age. Seo Woo: We were really close in the beginning but we shoot in two separate groups now because we're much more busier so when we run into someone on set, we'll feel both happy and sorry for each other, shoot our scenes, and then say goodbye again. Cheon Jeong-myeong always puts in a lot of effort to keep us in line and help boost our spirits. More than anything, I'm really having a lot of fun. 10: How is it working with Moon Geun-young who plays the role of your sister? Seo Woo: I respect her. She's a younger sister that I really like as well as a senior actor that I respect. I cannot even dare imitate her 11 years of acting experience, it's incredible that she has done it since she was so young, and she's someone that I feel is a real actor,...More
[FOCUS] Wednesday/Thursday drama rivalry - Part 1 2010/04/19, Source, "Cinderella's Sister" VS "Prosecutor Princess" VS "Personal Taste"
Picking out your favorite flavor is only possible when you are dealing with ice creams. For drama maniacs, it is practically a torture that three dramas, who each premiered offering similar doses of fun, are all broadcast in the same time slot. You may have yet to decide which channel to settle on with the shows still early into their run, so here is a comparative analysis which could help you make up your mind on which show to watch real-time, which to watch the re-run of, and which to watch through your IPTV service provider.
1. The Moment of Truth: The one scene where you can witness the producers' hard efforts
"Cinderella's Sister" Song Gang-sook (played by Lee Mi-sook) wraps her arms around Goo Dae-sung (played by Kim Kap-soo) when she is startled while riding on the back of his rattling bicycle. But the bike actually rattled because Song Gang-sook had kicked its rear wheel. This single scene describes what the show's two characters are like -- the sly Song Gang-sook and Goo Dae-sung, who is clueless when it comes to women -- and sums up their romantic emotions for each other. Thanks to such scenes, "Cinderella's Sister" explained its basic set-up in one episode and went on to unfold its main story. How the producers left a lingering feeling through using restrained forms of expression, such as simply showing the bike left behind after the two characters fall from a low slanted row, rather than attempting to explain the details to the incident, was also impressive,...More
[FOCUS] Wednesday/Thursday drama rivalry - Part 2 2010/04/19, Source, 6. Work and Love, Love and Work: The story for all three stories are set at the workplace
"Prosecutor Princess": It is impossible to perfectly reenact the process of investigation that prosecutors carry out unless the program is a reality documentary. However, "Prosecutor Princess" adds an abundance of detail into depicting the daily life of a civil servant. The show has received reviews that even regular office workers can relate to the portrayal of the job description of a rookie prosecutor. "Princess" could become a good example of an office drama if it lays out the process of investigations with common sense.
"Personal Taste": One can't really say it is specialized. The drama does not explain through what process a house is designed, how to trim the different kinds of wood in order to make furniture, or what the necessary preparations are in carrying out a bidding. The scenes where Park Gae-in takes part in a furniture exhibition and has Jun Jin-ho cut the acrylic from a blind in order to avoid an emergency situation adds onto the sense of reality in telling the difficulties one struggles as an employee.
"Cinderella's Sister": Everyone gathers together at the makgeolli brewery called "Daesungdoga". However, this Goo Dae-sung's world of abundance and is one of the things that Song Gang-sook wants, but it does not display any characteristics as a work place. One might forget that it is a brewery, if it did not show the scene of Goo Hyo-seon (played by Seo Woo) drinking the residue left after rice liquor is drained before going to school. As a whole, the story of the self righteous self-made owner, the femme fatale-like new lady of the house, and the naive yet talkative workers and large family all seem like trite set-ups,...More

Q: You must be quite determined since this is the first drama you're taking on since being discharged from the military.Cheon Jeong-myeong (Cheon): While I was in the military, I had mentioned to Jo In-sung that I would like to take on a certain type of drama and it was similar in certain ways with "Cinderella's Sister". So I was happy when I got the part. I do feel pressured because reports have been saying I'm making a comeback for the first time in four years. I'm just focusing on my acting for now. Q: What was it about "Cinderella's Sister" that worked for you? Cheon: I personally had wanted to do a film but had told Jo that it may be better to do a drama first since the reaction comes faster. After I made up my mind to take on a drama, I thought hard over which I should do. I didn't think I would be ready to take on genres outside youth romance so "Cinderella's Sister" worked for me in that aspect too. And more than anything, I liked the producer and scenarist. My close actor friends, such as Ko Hyun-jung and Jo In-sung, had been in dramas by Kim Gyoo-wan. They said I'd have a hard time because my lines would be long but they told me it would be great and it would be an honor for me. Gi-hoon wasn't supposed to play such a big part in the drama. That's why I thought a newcomer would play the female role opposite me. But the script got changed the more I talked with the scenarist and my role got better,...More

Q: Cheon Jeong-myeong, have you gotten used to the atmosphere on set?Cheon Jeong-myeong (Cheon): I think I got the hang of things quite faster than I usually do because up until part of the fourth episode, we've been shooting on rotation so being able to meet up with everyone and act with them has helped. I also tend to prepare a lot in advance, read my script a lot and I had constantly kept in touch and met up with the other actors so that has also helped me to understand my character more quickly. I've become better at anticipating what will be in the next script I get. I used to get the hang of things into the second half of a drama in the past so I'm glad it's happened faster this time,...More
