  • [HanCinema's Hall Of Fame Review] "Masquerade"

    2013/10/12,
In the Spotlight this Week: "Masquerade" (2012) by Choo Chang-min Trips to Korea's Hermit Kingdom have proven particularly lucrative these past few years, none more so that Choo Chang-min's fourth feature "Masquerade" (2012). Set during Korea's exclusive Joseon Dynasty (1392 ~ 1910), "Masquerade" is a cinematic imagining of the fifteen missing days from King Gwanghae royal journals. Choo's film spent an impressive fourteen weeks in Korea's top ten and attracted 12.3 million viewers during the last quarter of 2012, making it the highest grossing Korean historical drama of all time. "Masquerade" was also honoured at Korea's 2012 Grand Bell Awards (its most prestigious award ceremony), claiming fifteen awards including Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and the Popularity Award. The film almost walked away as the highest grossing film released that year, but was narrowly outdone by Choi Dong-hoon's "The Thieves" (12.9M), a modern heist flick that dominated proceedings over Korea's sticky summer,...More

  • [HanCinema's Film Review] Returning to the Sunny side of Love.

    2013/07/27,
Korean films are particularly intrigued by the tragic tests time and memory can place on love. This fascination extends across genres and the results are often not the Hollywood fairy tale viewers might come to expect. We see this in recent films like "The Servant", where Choon-hyang (Korea's 'Juliet' played by Jo Yeo-jeong) suffers a devasting physical trauma that leaves her mentally and emotionally incapacitated, no longer able to remember the love and passion she once had for her forbidden lover Bang-ja (Kim Joo-hyeok). In Park Chan-wook's cult classic "Old Boy" Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is confronted with an impossible decision at the end, one that cruelly pits the love for his daughter against his own sanity. (I think it will be highly interesting to see how Spike Lee's version of the story's ending differs to Park's). There are other examples of how time and love collide in Korea cinema, often with truly memorable results, and recently I returned to one of the most successful dramas in recent years: Kang Hyeong-cheol's "Sunny - 2010",...More

    2013/06/10, Source,
It might be impossible to see "Secretly and Greatly" without being immediately drawn to the protagonist, Kim Soo-hyeon-I, who switches back and forth from an agile spy to perfect idiot. His Webtoon-based movie "Secretly and Greatly", which opened last Tuesday, is centered on an elite spy, Won Ryu-hwan, from the North who has gone through brutal training, only to be ordered to play an idiot named Dong Goo in a poor neighborhood in South Korea. And Kim Soo-hyeon-I just effortlessly plays the dim-witted big brother, Dong Goo, wearing in his trademark green tracksuit,...More
