Summer Big Bang for Musicals

The Korean musical market is literally witnessing a "big bang" this summer.

Korean musical-goers will have a rare opportunity this summer to enjoy both critically-acclaimed and commercially successful Broadway musicals such as "Man of La Mancha", "Cats", "Chicago", "Gambler", "Hedwig", and "Thrill Me". We enlisted musical critics to offer their evaluations of the musicals based on five criteria –entertainment, music, cast, stage, and story.

"Cats" feeds the audience's eyes with splendid dances and extraordinary stage settings. 9th Jeonju International Film Festival Kicks Off

The 9th annual Jeongju International Film Festival kicked off its nine-day run with an opening ceremony on May 1. Once again this year, the film festival has invited independent films from all around the world.

Actors Ahn Seong-gi and Choi Jeong-won hosted the opening ceremony, which was attended by 2,000 guests and visitors. Song Ha-jin, the chairman of the organizing committee, declared the opening of this year's film festival and Min Byeong-rok, the chief of the organization, delivered a congratulatory speech.

Ahead of the opening ceremony, Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Yoo In-chon, head of the United Democratic Party Son Hak-kyu, U.S. Ambassador to Korea Alexander Vershbow, film directors Im Kwon-taek and Lee Myeong-se, actors Jeon Do-yeon and Park Hae-il and other celebrities and dignitaries greeted the local and foreign press members as well as their fans on the red carpet.

[MOVIE REVIEW] 'Small Town Rivals' puts comic twist on friendship

Rivalry is a double-edged sword: It can be a bitter yet healthy pill to accelerate sound competition, or it can cut into a formerly amicable relationship, driving a wedge between friends.

Either way, rivalry is an interesting theme for filmmakers, and director Jang Gyoo-seong has attempted to dissect what underlies a bittersweet competition between close friends in his latest flick "Small Town Rivals (Yijanggwa gunsu)".

The Korean title offers a clue about the film's structure. "Yijang" refers to the head of a small town, a nominal title that does not carry much public authority. "Gunsu", meaning magistrate, is one of the highest positions in a provincial government. Their gap is as wide as, well, the stylistic discrepancy between Cha Seung-won and Yoo Hae-jin.

Lee Ji-hoon to hold movie promotion and fan meeting in Japan

Singer/actor Lee Ji-hoon will hold a fan meeting Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Oriental Hotel Kochi in Kochi Prefecture, the shooting location of his latest movie "Sweet Dream", which was filmed entirely in Japan.

Aimed at promoting the movie, the fan meeting will comprise a talk show, games, a handshaking event, and a visit to the filming set of the final scene of "Sweet Dream" to promote exchange among Lee's fans.

The filming of "Sweet Dream" took three months, beginning from last September. It is an action movie about Korean youths who stand up to members of the Japanese yakuza. In the story, actor Yeon Jung-hoon plays the main character, "K", who becomes the leader of his gang after numerous conflicts with his authoritative father. Japanese actor Kitamura Katsuki portrays a third-generation Japanese-Korean named "Datsuya", while Lee plays "Jun-ho", a friend of Datsuya's.
