Actress Choi Ji-woo Signs Agreement with UP School

Actress Choi Ji-woo has signed an agreement pledging 100 million won to the UP School Program of the Busan government's project aimed at improving the city's educational environment. The signing ceremony was attended by students from Deokmun High School for Girls--Choi's alma mater--along with her former teachers and education officials.

The UP School Program was launched by the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education and the Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry to improve the educational environment in the city's schools. As of May this year, over 1,500 companies, organizations and individuals had donated 13 billion won toward the cause. The donations have been distributed to schools to improve students' learning environment and help low-income families.

Choi Ji-woo Donates W100 Million for Poor Children

Actress Choi Ji-woo will donate a W100 million (US$1=W1,282) worth of scholarships for poor students in Busan, her hometown.

The Busan Office of Education on Wednesday said the actress will hand out the scholarships when she attends a campaign aimed at improving the educational environment and nurturing human resources on July 1.

Since 2000, the actress has also donated W300 million to her high school in Busan to provide scholarships for needy students.

Rekindling Korean Wave

It's a dilemma Korea has encountered many times before: plenty of tourists ― indeed, numbers are rising ― but a dearth of attractions with which to occupy them.

In the past year, visitor numbers have increased, largely on the back of a weak won.

But with exchange rates turning unfavorable to foreign visitors, the growth is beginning to slow. So authorities are faced with the same old problems: Put simply, the nation lacks things for foreign tourists to see and do.

The tourism industry has been aware of the shortcomings for some time and has made efforts to develop new attractions and programs.

Now another pair of developments are about to come to fruition. At the end of the month a premium Korean restaurant called Unamjeong, which has been revived from a famous comic, and an exhibition hall named "Star Avenue", which will help re-ignite Hallyu, or the Korean Cultural Wave.

Korean Wave star Bae Yong-joon to hold fan meetings in Tokyo

Bae Yong-joon emerged as one of Japan's most sought-after celebrities since his TV drama "Winter Sonata" hit the Japanese airwaves in April 2004.

Bae became one of the first big stars of the Hallyu ("Korean Wave", explosive popularity of Korean pop culture especially in Asia).

"Yonsama", his Japanese nickname, was even chosen as the most popular word in Japan in 2004.

After all these years, the craze for him is still palpable in Japan and come this September he is to meet some approximately 50,000 fans at the Tokyo Dome, the largest stadium in the city.

On Sept. 29, he will promote an animated version of his megahit TV drama "Winter Sonata" and will hold another fan meeting on Sept. 30 to promote his essay on the beauty of Korea.

The two events will be broadcast live at multiplex cinemas across Japan and about 5,000 fans are expected to watch them live on screen.
