  • [HanCinema's Lists] The Top 5 Korean Period Films of All-Time

    2014/01/10,
Korean period features are big business that, when done right, really do bring in the big bucks. The past few years, in particular, have yielded some stellar titles that have seriously resonated with local audiences. This trend is set to continue in 2014 as a host of new historical dramas and action flicks are lining up to try and capture the public's imagination by re-framing the past in unique and exciting ways. Some of the historical films to look out for in 2014 include: "KUNDO : Age of the Rampant", "A Touch of Zen", "Pirates", "The Huntresses", and "Battle Of Myeongryang"; but before we usher in these new historical yarns, here's a quick look at the five highest grossing Korean period films of all-time that this year's entries will hope to challenge,...More
  • [HanCinema's Film Review] "Top Star"

    2013/11/02,
The immediate sparkle "Top Star" brings to the surface is just how glamorous everything looks. The life of a screen star is a shiny, fabulous, fun place to be. Just in terms of sheer attractiveness the actors in this movie look great, in perfectly made-up form, and for once the narrative actually justifies why we get to look at so many beautiful people. But underneath this beautiful appearance lies...well, nothing all that serious actually. Anybody who wants to see a takedown on the more grotesque warped aspects of screen acting, "Rough Play" is your film,...More
  • [HanCinema's Box Office Review] 2013.10.25 - 2013.10.27

    2013/10/28,
Gook Dong-seok's disturbing opening act "Blood and Ties" step into the game this past weekend and narrowly claimed the majority vote over last week's favourite: "Gravity". Gook's film drew in a spritely 648,192 filmgoers over 611 screens; a victory somewhat salted by the fact that Cuarón's 3D space thriller still floated away with most of the money (37.3%), for technical reasons. "Hwayi : A Monster Boy" and "Hope" gracefully gave way to Gook's debut, each taking about a hundred thousand admissions hit compared to their efforts last weekend. In addition to "Blood and Ties", Park Joong-hoon's "Top Star" and Shin Yeon-shick's "Rough Play" shook up the middle order somewhat; and the omnibus drama "If You Were Me 6" (4,853 admissions) almost became the fourth new Korean release to snare a top ten finish,...More
