"The Host 2" Features Monsters in Cheonggye

For people who visit the Han River, some may have wondered if there is anything living under the deep waters. That fantasy was brought to life in the 2006 hit movie "The Host", and for fans that enjoyed the thriller, news of a sequel will indeed grab attention.

Chungeoram Film, producer of the film, said that in "The Host 2", (working title) more monsters will appear but this time from Cheonggye Stream. The draft for the scenario has been completed by Kang Do-yoon, better known as Kang Pool, a renowned Internet cartoonist.

"The sequel will portray the lives of the city street vendors, the Cheonggye stream construction workers and the police before the stream was completed", Choi Yong-bae, the head of Chungeoram Film said.

President-elect Lee Myung-bak successfully brought back to life the Cheonggye Stream in 2005 when he was mayor of Seoul.

'The Host' Sequel Planned For 2009

Chungeorahm Film, the film production and distribution company of the blockbuster hit "The Host", plans to release a sequel to the film in 2009.

But director Bong Joon-ho, the driving force of the original, will not join the film crew making "The Host 2" as he has other plans.

"We'll start making the film from this fall", Choi Yong-bae, CEO of Chungeorahm, was quoted as saying by Yonhap News.

South Korean technical staff will make a 10-minute computer graphic (CG) test film this fall.

"We have gathered technical know-how from making `The Host"', Choi said. The film was made in collaboration with foreign technical staff including some from the United States. "I think we can use domestic CG technology this time".

'Host' eats rivals at Asian festival

The Korean monster flick "The Host" walked off with four grand awards at the debut of the Asian Film Festival in Hong Kong last week.
"The Host" picked up best picture, best actor, best cinematographer and best visual effects awards. The film's leading man, Song Kang-ho, was named best actor.
"[The film is] not only about anti-Americanism but about problems in Korea, for example asking the police for help but not receiving any", said executive producer Choi Yong-bae, who accepted the white marble and metal statuette for best film.
The flick brought in more than 13 million viewers in Korea and generated over 80 billion won ($85 million) in sales, while costing only 15 billion won for production and marketing.

Most popular movies this year are expected to generate sequels. It is evidence that Korean films also have "brand" power. It is a phenomenon caused by sequels that were more popular than the sequels. The key to success is to continue with the sequel but differentiate it by adding new material.

Monster film devours Korean and U.S. competitors

One particular scene in "The Host" in retrospect almost looks like a commentary on the film's box office prowess. A young woman is enjoying a relaxed moment in the sunny Han River citizen's park, her ears covered by headphones. She is totally oblivious to other visitors madly dashing past her, eyes popping out of their sockets and screaming until their lungs burst. WHAM! A thing that looks like a gigantic tadpole with malformed legs and a hungry, lamprey mouth stomps her, like an SUV with a Texas license plate squishing an armadillo. She and other panicked Seoulites, some of whom will end up inside the monster's belly before the movie gets past its first fifteen minutes, might as well be standing for "The Host's" competitors.
