1st DMZ Documentary Film Festival Opened

The DMZ Documentary Film Festival - the first of its kind in Korea - will open in Paju Book City on October 22.

The opening ceremony for this event will be held on the outdoor stage, in front of Ichae Shopping Mall, with participation of celebrities including Park Ye-jin, Bae Soo-bin, Lee Yeong-ja, Jang Hyeon-seong, Kim Ji-soo, Kim Young-cheol, Yoon Kye-sang, Cha Soo-yeon, and Choo Sang-mi and her husband. The event is emceed by Kim Je-dong.

Yoon Do-hyeon, the festival's PR ambassador; actress Lee In-hye; and 4th-grade student Kim Gwan-yoo, who lives in Daeseongdong Village, located inside the DMZ, will also attend the opening ceremony. Gangsane Band will perform a live set in honor of this occasion, as well.
Produced by the martial arts director Jeong Doo-hong, who is also a member of the Festival Organizing Committee, White Wild Goose is performed by ballerina Yang Inko only for this festival.

Puchon Fantasy Film Fest Kicks Off Thursday

The 13th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival kicks off on Thursday in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province featuring 201 films from 41 countries.

Some 38 films including Korea's "Good Night Sleep for the Bad", Japan's "Sonic: Night of the Werehog", and "Life and Death of Porno Gang" from Serbia, are premiered at the PiFan Film Festival this year.

The opening ceremony, at the Bucheon Citizen's Hall at 7 p.m. on Thursday, showcases an array of film stars such as directors Im Kwon-taek and Yang Ik-joon and actors Ahn Seong-gi, Kang Soo-yeon, Choo Sang-mi, Jang Nara and Koo Hye-seon.

The opening film "MW" directed by Hitoshi Iwamoto tells a story of a massacre in a small Japanese island 16 years ago.

PiFan Launches 2 New Awards

The 13th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, taking place July 16 – 26, has announced the launch of 2 new awards this year, the NETPAC and the Fujifilm Eterna award. Both awards will be presided over by juries, with the former going to an Asian film and the latter to a Korean film.

The NETPAC award will be given out to the best Asian film in the 'Off the Fantastic' section which introduces new offbeat genre films from throughout Asia. PiFan has created the Fujifilm Eterna Award for the purpose of promoting Korean independent feature films. As a prize, 8000ft of Fujifilm Eterna will be awarded to the best Korean independent feature film.

Award-winners will be announced July 23 at the Closing Night Ceremony, although screenings will continue until the 26th. Heading this year's Puchon Choice Jury which presents awards in five categories is Tony Rayns, a British specialist in Asian cinema, festival programmer and contributor to Sight and Sounds magazine.
