Biography
HA Myeong-joong began his career as a director after 18 years working as a top star in the Korean and Hong Kong film industries. He first began to receive attention as a director in 1983 with his shocking and experimental debut work , which depicted the wanderings of the post-Korean War generation and which also earned HA a Best New Director prize from the local Grand Bell Awards. Subsequently in 1985, his film which emphasized the Korean people, Korean themes and the concept of humanity was invited to the competition section of the 35th Berlin International Film Festival. Directed and starred in by HA himself, the film depicted human desires and the weary life of the Korean people under Japanese colonialism. Much noted for its accomplished aesthetics, the film won Best Cinematography at the Chicago Film Festival and Best Music at the Ghent Film Festival in Belgium. Afterwards, he directed depicting an uprising on an island by pure-hearted boat people against treacherous boat owners during the Japanese colonial era, and , about children raised without their parents. He also produced the film , which screened in the Critics Week section of the 1996 Cannes Film Festival.
