[HanCinema's Film Review] "Part-Time Spy" 2017/04/01,
Yeong-sil (played by Kang Ye-won) is a loser. She's in her mid-thirties yet has spent almost her entire adult life working weird part-time jobs in the desperate hope of being called up for a real interview for a full-time position one of these days. And once Yeong-sil finally manages to get oh-so-perilously close to success...she's forced to work overtime to take down a voice phishing scam, when this is obviously not in her job description. On the flip side, Jeong-an (played by Han Chae-ah) is a cop- and taking down voice phishing scams is in her job description,...More
[Interview] "Part-Time Spy" Kang Ye-won, "Namgoong Min was nice" 2017/03/21, Source,
The country has 6.44 million temporary workers. They have Nowhere to Turn to even if they get discharged overnight. The government released a system of elementary school sports instructors in 2008 but most schools only employ them for 11 months. This is part of a scheme to avoid paying pension which becomes true if the position is filled for 12 months.
In 2012, 2014 and 2016 released a law forbidding the 'breaking down of contract' but it didn't work. It's spring but it's still winter for those without real jobs,...More
[HanCinema's Box Office Review] 2017.03.17 - 2017.03.19 2017/03/20,
A trio of foreign beasts capture the podium...
A new beast arrived in Korea last Thursday and dislodged "Kong" at the top of the chart. With 66.86% of the box office pie, Bill Condon's musical drama "Beauty and the Beast" (Emma Watson, Dan Stevens) dominated proceedings by capturing 1.4 million admissions ($10.5 million). The film, a remake of Disney's 1991 live-action classic, after having also been recently released in America, has already banked $350 million worldwide (the film was produced for an estimated $160 million),...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Made in China" 2015/06/20,
Chen (played by Park Ki-woong) is a Chinese eel farmer who smuggles himself into South Korea to get his eels tested, in an effort to figure out the transnational reasons behind familial business failures. Incidentally, Chen looks very hot with his shirt off and is surprisingly good at fighting people as long as he's not blindsided. There's just one problem. Try as he might, Chen will forever be marked by the fact that he was "Made In China",...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Marry Him If You Dare" Episode 4 2013/10/22,
Jeong Yeong-hwa and Han Chae-ah have really good chemistry as the beta-couple in "Marry Him If You Dare". There's a deliberate give-and-take in their interactions that's absent when either of these actors are on-screen with any other characters. When their characters meet up in a bar, and end up talking for basically no reason, this conversation goes on a long time even when the perfect excuse comes up to ditch it.
Likewise, we get a taste of how Kim Sin and Mi-Rae were able to get together in the original timeline,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Marry Him If You Dare" Episode 3 2013/10/21,
The merits of Kim Sin (played by Lee Dong-Geun) as a human being are on relatively dubious footing. He turns cranky at the slightest provocation and clearly enjoys starting fights- a part of his personality that's in bizarre conflict with his squeaky clean demeanor as a broadcaster, though it doesn't at all conflict with Kim Sin's hard-hitting passive-aggressive journalistic style. His swearing is a crude, but effective exemplar of this. Especially since this part of his attitude doesn't go away just because he has a moment of softness,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Bridal Mask" 2013/01/26,
As popular as masked heroes with secret identities are in popular culture, there's surprisingly little real analysis of how this psychically affects the person wearing the mask. Try to imagine yourself treating a person that you genuinely love in a completely different, possibly even violent antagonistic way, solely because you're wearing a mask. Even if you could stomach that kind of lie and deceit, how do you think that would make your loved one feel? What if you discovered that a person who you love was antagonizing you under an assumed identity? Would the reason even matter? Would that make the betrayal any less painful?,...More
