A galaxy of stars including Lee Young-ae, Jeon Do-yeon, Song Yoon-ah and Han Chae-young and actor Won Bin will appear at the Best Star Award hosted by designer Andre Kim on Nov. 27. At 73, the flamboyant designer is as active as ever, with fashion shows here and abroad attracting many celebrities.
The normal hurdles to casting A-listers do not seem to exist for Kim. Lee Young-ae, who has drastically cut down on public since after her marriage, will willingly appear for him. So how does he do it? Kim wakes up at 5:30 a.m. every day and reads 17 newspapers. "Reading newspapers is the best way to absorb a massive amount of knowledge and information with little investment. So I read newspapers no matter what", he says. That has helped him develop a knack for discovering rising stars and support them. Kim casts them as model for his fashion shows so that they can get media coverage, and that is why they can't refuse him even when they become hugely famous. Kim Tae-hee has been i...| More
By Lee KomedaStaff Writer "Good Morning President", the most recent film by writer and director Jang Jin ("Guns and Talks", "Righteous Ties") may have been a safe choice as the opening film for the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) held last month: humorous and unthreatening. Tickets to the screening of the film at the largest international film festival in Asia were sold out within two minutes of their availability, possibly aided by the hallyu (Korean wave) powers of Jang Dong-gun. The film skips stones across the domestic and foreign politics of Korea, without fully taking a plunge into the murky waters of ties between the two Koreas or the ethical dilemmas that politicians face during their tenure. Instead, we are left with a few great comedic moments in the movie that leave you feeling like you just witnessed a hybrid between Love Actually and a Korean sitcom. The movie is vaguely divided into vignettes of three fictional Presidents. The first of these anecdotes ...| More
Jeans brands seem to be replacing cosmetics as the most coveted prize among Korea's advertising contracts. Traditionally, becoming the " face " of cosmetics brands was the recognition of bona fide star status. Actresses Lee Young-ae, Shim Eun-ha, Ko So-young and Lee Mi-yeon were the dominant faces in cosmetics advertising for a long time, but a new generation of stars are drawn to pants.
Local jeans brands now advertise using big names like Lee Hyo-lee, Son Dam-bi, Han Hyo-joo, Han Ji-hye, Han Chae-young, Kim Ah-joong, and Han Ye-seul. What they have in common, of course, is the slim figure to carry it off. Jeans ads inevitably highlight the models' legs, which therefore have to be long enough to make up over 50 percent of the body length. The trend also has something to do with changing standards of beauty, a shift of pretty faces to beautiful bodies. Dr. Bae Joon-sung at the JK Plastic Surgery Center said, "These days, women with a glamorous, sexy bodyline are popular. Those wi...| More

By Lee Hyo-wonStaff Reporter BUSAN ― Choosing Jang Jin's "Good Morning President" ost morale for South Korean film industry, festival director Kim Dong-ho said. The film is a feel good, albeit blemished, drama that lightheartedly throws in ethical questions and personal dilemmas into state affairs. But choosing "President" seemed to be a more nominal choice for opening Asia's largest cinema event. The film skims the surface of Northeast Asia geopolitics, including some red-hot North Korea issues, but laughter and emotional reactions that it aims to draw from viewers are easy to miss for non-Koreans (though Jang Dong-gun's hallyu power will certainly draw attention from fans scattered around the globe, from Japan to Mexico). The film takes viewers to the private quarters of the Blue House set amid the terms of three fictional presidents. Kim Jong-ho (Lee Soon-jae) is an elderly head-of-state who wins, just before retiring, the lottery he bought as part of a photo-op. ...| More

Staff Reporter Busan - The 14th edition of the Pusan (Busan) International Film Fstival (PIFF) kicked off Thursday with glitz and glam. Some 150 star cineastes and VIP guests walked the red carpet, sizzling up the cool autumn evening at the seaside resort. The Busan Yatching Center Outdoor Theater exploded with excitement, as more than the usual number of fans who could not secure seats swarmed the venue outside. Competition was fierce among domestic and foreign press during the photo-op. Hollywood heartthrob Josh Hartnett and South Korean superstar Lee Byeong-heon stole the limelight as the two "I Come With the Rain" co-stars walked down the red carpet together. Also in the spotlight was actress Kim Yoon-jin, who appeared glamorous in a chic black dress. The "Lost" star attended the PIFF opening ceremony for the first time as the new face of makeup brand L'Oreal, an official partner of the event. Meanwhile, Jang Jin, who directed the event's opening film "...| More
