'Night' Shows Innovative Minimalism

Several films have put Hong Sang-soo on the cinematic map as a unique minimalist, and he upholds the reputation with his latest work "Night and Day". He captures the quizzical human sentiment with subtlety and presents mundane scenes with crafty simplicity.

"Night and Day" marks Hong's first project shot outside of Korea. It is set in Paris where Hong himself had resided temporarily. While the film is thoroughly Korean in nature, it has that dash of "je ne sais quoi" inherent to French films.

It recently premiered at the 58th Berlin International Film Festival, earning positive reviews from international critics.

Actor Kim Yeong-ho stars as Seung-nam, a painter in his early 40s who is about to get arrested for smoking marijuana. Scared, he flees to Paris, leaving behind his beloved wife (Hwang Soo-jeong). Hong Sang-soo's Film Vies for Berlin Award

While Korea celebrated Seollal on Feb. 7, on the far side of the globe, Germany greeted cineaste and cinephiles from all over the world for the 58th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), which runs through Sunday. This year, Hong Sang-soo's "Night and Day" competes for the Golden Bear award while three other Korean films make their mark at one of the most exciting and large-scale film events.

"Night and Day" is Hong's eighth feature film and it is the first time the acclaimed director competes at the Berlinale. Known as an innovative minimalist, Hong had competed in Cannes with "Woman is the Future of Man" (2004) and "Tale of Cinema" (2005). Before flying to Berlin, he stopped by Geneva earlier this month because "Woman on the Beach" (2006) was invited to the Black Movie Festival.

Four Korean films to screen at Berlin Film Fest

Acclaimed director HONG Sang-soo will return to the Berlin International Film Festival with his eighth film "Night and Day", which screens in the festival's competition section. This will be the first time that a film by HONG competes at Berlin, after his previous works "Woman is the Future of Man" (2004) and "Tale of Cinema" (2005) competed at Cannes.

The film, recipient of 2005 KOFIC Production Support for Art Films, which was 90% shot in Paris, stars KIM Yeong-ho as an artist who runs off to France and leaves behind his wife played by HWANG Soo-jeong. PARK Eun-hye and LEE Seon-gyoon are cast as art students in Paris.

HONG's film is one of four Korean films that have been invited to various sections of the Berlinale. Actress Hwang's 'Night and Day' to Compete at Berlin

Director Hong Sang-soo's film 'Night and Day' starring actress Hwang Soo-jeong will compete in the 58th Berlin International Film Festival (Feb. 7-17).

The film, Hong's eighth, is the only Korean film invited to the competitive section. It will have its world premiere during the festival.

With 90% of the film shot in Paris, the story is about the delightfully eccentric journey of a state appointed painter who suddenly escapes to Paris from Seoul. Actor Kim Young-ho plays the main lead, actress Park Eun-hye plays an art student in Paris and actor Lee Seon-gyoon plays a North Korean student also studying in Paris.

Actress Hwang is the kind wife of the hero who earnestly waits for her husband's return to Korea. Although it is not a large role, her character is very important in the movie. She had no shoots in Paris and all of her scenes in Korea have been finished.
