Ji-yeon (played by Im Soo-jeong) is a woman in her thirties who's been drifting around aimlessly on the international circuit. After an interview with Seong-yeol (played by Yoo Yeon-seok) an intriguing possibility is floated. Does Ji-yeon continue with her dead-end lifestyle, or agree to the risky and convolunted scheme? You can probably guess the answer to that question. What kind of boring movie would prevent its characters from doing anything interesting? Well I can think of several actually but "Perfect Proposal" isn't one of them,...More

It was not one of Park's most profitable, but "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" possesses an invigorating type of magic only this master could muster. It tells the tale of a troubled young girl (Yeong-goon played by Im Soo-jeong) who is recently admitted to a mental institution after nearly electrocuting herself to death. There she serendipitously stumbles into an odd relationship with an anti-social schizophrenic (Rain as Il-soon) obsessed with oral hygiene and thievery, and shares with him her secret of being cyborg. The film is padded with magical-realism, lovable characters, attractive compositions, and at its core is a heart-warming story of the love we'd all like to get lost in/struck by. Enjoy! [HanCinema's Film Review] "Sad Movie" 2013/12/21,
Foreboding title notwithstanding, the first thing that really stands out about "Sad Movie" are the comedic elements. Between the four vaguely related love-centered plotlines, there's this strong undertone of dark humor. There's a somewhat hostile relationship between mother and son, a threatened break-up over unchanging circumstances, a threatened marriage over unchanging circumstances, and a romance where one of the participants is neither seen or heard. It's all as bizarre as it sounds, yet to anyone who's been in these kinds of situations the emotions ring quite true.
What unites all these disparate stories is the overhanging dread of inevitability,...More

[Guest Review] "Everything about my Wife" 2012/10/26,
"Everything about my Wife" is about Doo-hyun (Lee Seon-gyoon), a man who wants to divorce his wife, Jung-in (Im Soo-jeong) who he feels has become overbearing. However, he doesn't have the courage to do it himself, so he gets a local Casanova, Sung-ki (Ryoo Seung-yong) to try and seduce her so that she'll want to divorce him. "Everything about my Wife" features three major actors as its leads and has done very well at the local box office. It has all the right basic elements for a crowd-pleaser- three popular lead actors and a very zany plot that gives them a chance to mug for the camera. As far as laughs go, it does not disappoint,...More

The small independent films that I catch at the Busan or Jeonju film festivals may not be released by December, but they generally do get a small commercial release within a year or two, so I can include them in a later list. This year, however, I came across a great film that may end up not getting a commercial release, so I squeezed it in where #10 would normally go. I was racking my brain over that #10 slot anyway,...More
[User Review] Finding Mr. Destiny 2011/11/12, Source,
Did I say I love colors in Korean movies? I do. "Finding Mr. Destiny" has similar color palette to that of "Antique", but without such cold blue hues as the latter. The literal title is "Finding Mr. Kim Jongwuk" (김종욱 찾기) and basically it's about it. But it would be very hard to describe this movie in one sentence.
This movie was based on the musical play under the same title and done by the same director Jang Yoo-jeong. After the musical, she directed the movie as well. Perhaps this is why little me was happy seeing musical performance inside the movie, ohohoho!,...More

A scene from film "JEON WOO CHI : The Taoist WizardWOOCHI" [Zip Cinema]
"JEON WOO CHI : The Taoist Wizard" is the sole Korean movie on the local box office which will be up to par for competition against the recent rush of some of Hollywood's most anticipated films. The collaboration between director Choi Dong-hoon of hit films "The Big Swindle" and "Tazza: The High Rollers" ("The War Of Flower") and the cast composed of Gang Dong-won, Kim Yoon-seok and Im Soo-jeong is already enough to catch the eye of the moviegoers. But the plot in which character Woochi (played by Gang Dong-won) comes to life in modern day Korea for the first time in 500 years to fight off his opponent Hwadam (played by Kim Yoon-suk) and other monsters, clearly reveals what "WOOCHI" is aiming for. This 'Korean superhero flick' is a Korean-style blockbuster which creates buzz with its sheer scale, ahead of having to judge how well it has been made. Of course, its size may seem relatively small compared to its competitors but it will be interesting to see how well this movie -- made by a director who has a firm understanding on Korean stars and the mentality of the Korean public -- will fare amongst the crowd of Hollywood blockbusters.,...More
