KOCCA-sponsored animated film, 'Indie Anibox : Selma's Protein Coffee', showing signs of becoming a big hit

A short animated omnibus film, 'Indie Anibox : Selma's Protein Coffee', currently showing in the cinemas, is gathering silent popularity. Now into its 4th week of its showing, unusual for an independent animated film, 'Selma's Protein Coffee' would likely become a big hit.

The premier for 'Indie Anibox : Selma's Protein Coffee' was held in the afternoon of the 4th. Seventy minutes of screening of three films were followed by a discussion with the director. On the 5th, twelve animated films, which won the 2007·2008 college students animated film contest, were revealed.

Asked whether unnatural line reading of the main character was what he directed, Director Jang Hyeong-yoon said, "I wanted the main character to be like most of people we meet everyday. I didn't want a professional actor. Characters in my past films were also normal, everyday people with a soft voice".

PiFan to Hold Genre Project Market

The Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan), now in its 12th edition, is launching a project market under the heading Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF2008). The 5 day platform will be launched during PiFan's 10-day run July 18 – 27 and will present projects from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, the US and the UK among others.

NAFF2008 was conceived to provide an impetus to Asian genre cinema and to encourage development and financing of officially selected genre projects. The main section, 'It Project' will present 16 projects from 8 countries and will take place July 20 – 22 at the Koryo Hotel in Bucheon. Business meetings, jury deliberation and cash awards will provide filmmakers exciting opportunities to advance their projects.

Director Jang Hyeong-yoon to release a collection of his animation DVD in Japan

An animation DVD featuring the works of award-winning director Jang Hyeong-yoon was officially released in Japan on March 6 by Comics Wave Film, Japan's leading animation distribution and production company.

The director is renowned for winning the Second Prize at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival in 2006, one of the four world animation festivals.

The DVD features Jang's four animations, including "Wolf Daddy", " A Letter ", and "Tea Time".

Comics Wave Film has been developing up-and-coming animation directors in Japan, such as Makoto Shinkai. Particularly, the said DVD is Comics Wave Film's first DVD featuring a non-Japanese director. Before the release of the DVD, the company had opened the 'New Animation Creators' in December last year through which it introduced Jang's works. This is the first collection of Korean animations that have been released in Japan, thus attracting much interest in the Korean animation industry.

Director Jang Hyeong-yoon will be introduced in Japan as an upcoming director of note.

The Japanese office of Korea Culture and Content Agency (KOCCA, CEO: Ko, Seok-Man) announced last December 6 that "Wolf Daddy", a film by director Jang, will be screened at the "New Animation Creators", which introduces young and upcoming animation directors in Japan. Chang is the first foreign director to be introduced through this program, although there had been a solo screening of Chang's four works.

Comics Wave Film, the host of this event, has produced several major Japanese animations, including that by director Makoto Shinkai. This event, which is ongoing (it started on December 8 and will end on December 21) at RiseX in Shibuya, Tokyo, also screens Voices of a Distant Star by Makato Shinkai and Kaede New Town by Naoto Iwakiri as well as other works by talented young Japanese animation directors. A fan meeting with director Chang will also be held on December 14.

Indie animation fest to kick off in Seoul

The third Independent Animation Festival will kick off at the Seoul Animation Center in downtown Seoul on Thursday, featuring 32 experimental animated films in the main competition section.

The festival has made its mark as a key venue for indie animation filmmakers in the Korean market. Unlike other film festivals which follow set formats, Indie-Anifest is known to allow more freedom to participating animators to elaborate their own themes, and show off their latest works.

The opening film is a 25-minute feature, "The Private Life of Murim Ilgeom" ("Indie Anibox : Selma's Protein Coffee"), directed by Jang Hyeong-yoon. The story involves a martial arts guru, Chin Young-young, who gets reborn as a vending machine. Although this contraption is duly fitted with a steel-coated surface, Chang laments his transformation into something less than noble.
