Staff Reporter Busan - The 14th edition of the Pusan (Busan) International Film Fstival (PIFF) kicked off Thursday with glitz and glam. Some 150 star cineastes and VIP guests walked the red carpet, sizzling up the cool autumn evening at the seaside resort. The Busan Yatching Center Outdoor Theater exploded with excitement, as more than the usual number of fans who could not secure seats swarmed the venue outside. Competition was fierce among domestic and foreign press during the photo-op. Hollywood heartthrob Josh Hartnett and South Korean superstar Lee Byeong-heon stole the limelight as the two "I Come With the Rain" co-stars walked down the red carpet together. Also in the spotlight was actress Kim Yoon-jin, who appeared glamorous in a chic black dress. The "Lost" star attended the PIFF opening ceremony for the first time as the new face of makeup brand L'Oreal, an official partner of the event. Every year around this time, thousands of people head to the southern port city of Busan, where the smell of the sea riding a crisp autumn breeze mingles with the faint scent of filmstrips at the Pusan International Film Festival. The festival, now in its 14th year, is set to screen its biggest lineup ever, with 355 films from 70 countries. Part of the festival's success can be attributed to the fact that it brings something new every year to cineastes who wait anxiously for the festival's autumn opening. "This year's PIFF will have the largest number of films ever, and we will be graced with the most glamorous guests we have ever had", PIFF director Kim Dong-ho said. Kim, who has been with the festival since its inception, has good reason to be proud of this year's lineup. It will be held on the biggest scale ever this year, featuring 355 films from 70 nations. With a budget expansion of nearly one billion won bringing the total up to 9.95 billion, the coast is clear for Korea's largest film festival to sail into harbor early next month. The opener for this year is the Korean film "Good Morning President", an abridged version of the politics and lives of three different presidents, directed by Jang Jin and starring Korea's major heartthrob Jang Dong-gun and two veteran actors Lee Soon-jae and Ko Doo-sim. It's been three years since Busan selected a local film for its curtain raiser. The closing film is "The Message" by Gao Qunshu and Chen Kuo-fu, and is a spy thriller movie set in China in 1942 during the war against Japan.
