[HanCinema's Industry Interview] 10 Questions for Actor Kahlid Elijah Tapia 2015/09/05,
HanCinema recently met up with actor Kahlid Elijah Tapia to find out about his experience working in South Korea's television and film industry.
You came to South Korea back in 2009 to teach English. What was it about the country and culture that inspired you to explore its film and television industry?
This is a funny one actually because it wasn't the country or the culture. I was living in Florida taking acting classes before I came to Korea and I actually was just wanting to live in this country for one year and go home. A fellow actress and now close friend recommended that I put my headshot and resume on Craigslist. I thought to myself, "For what?" "This is Korea, I can't get anything done here". But I did it and 28 credits on IMDb later, I'm still here. What I learned after posting my information is that I can be an actor anywhere. Especially in this internet driven age,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "The Shameless" 2015/06/13,
Jae-gon (played by Kim Nam-gil) is a generally unfriendly detective who has a distinct lack of a shame in his everyday interactions. If nothing else, I have to give "The Shameless" credit for having an accurate title. In nearly every scene there's at least one moment where one character acts so incredibly rude that I can't help but think to myself "have you no shame", and it's at that point I remember the title. What was I expecting, a story about happy well-adjusted characters?,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "Untold Scandal" 2014/09/19,
It's extremely tempting to view the crazy sumptuous games at play in "Untold Scandal" here as some sort of commentary on repressed Joseon sexuality. Director Lee Jae-yong certainly has enough fun with it from a cinematographic point of view. The sex is is hot and sensuous. If you're going into this movie expecting Bae Yong-joon to have lots of erotic fun times with many ample bosoms on display, you will not be disappointed. The film is exactly as advertised,...More
[HanCinema Feature] Historical Hysteria: Korean period films coming in 2014 2014/01/11, Joseon pirates, legends, swordsmen, angels and more coming our way in 2014...
Cinematic journeys back to Joseon and beyond have rewarded the Korean film industry with a string of profitable historical yarns, a trend that has got producers drooling with the prospect of tapping deeper into this regenerative cash cow. Recently, it's been Han Jae-rim's "The Face Reader" (9.1M admissions) that has had locals flustered and, in 2005, it was Lee Joon-ik's "The King and the Clown" that became the first Joseon-era flick to pass the 10 million admissions mark. It's big business with a cultural twist that locals enjoy supporting, international audiences love lapping up, and a trend that 2014 is keen to take advance of as a host of new retrospectives are getting raring to go,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Way Back Home" 2013/12/27,
Husband Jong-Bae (played by Ko Soo), wife Jeong-Yeon (played by Jeon Do-yeon), and daughter Hye-Rin (played by Kang Ji-woo) are for the most part a normal family with typical modest ambitions. They're thrust into a rather awful situation when a good deed for a friend is swiftly unexpectedly punished. Left with no other apparent way to preserve the family, Jeong-Yeon decides to steal a piece of bread.
Not literally, of course. But that's very much the tone "Way Back Home" sets, as the punishment the family receives first for a good deed, then a bad one, is horribly disproportionate to the provoking action,...More

[HanCinema's Hall of Fame Review] "Secret Sunshine": Soul Food for Thought 2013/12/14, In the Spotlight this Week: "Secret Sunshine" by Lee Chang-dong
Life can be really tough going, gruelling and cruel. Changes in career, a death in the family, and relocating are some of the biggest stressors a human being can expected to endure in the name of life. In "Secret Sunshine", cine-poet Lee Chang-dong tackles these hard-hitting events and asks what someone might have to do to support a truly troubled soul experiencing these major life forks. We can empathise, we can befriend, we can lie to them and tell it's all going to be okay, but sometimes we just need to be patient and follow them as they trudge through the pain. Lee's films have a remarkable spirit about them, a humanist honesty that don't force change, push healing, or prescribe artificial catalysts for growth. In "Secret Sunshine" Lee winds up a tragic heroine as tight as you can imagine, then watches her march off down an uneven road with only a shadowing mechanic to love her unconditionally along the way,...More

Korean actresses no longer pretend to be pretty, weak, ingenuous 2013/11/11, Source,
Korean actresses have changed. They are giving up pretending to be pretty, weak and ingenuous.
Kim Seon-ah, model-turned actress who is 170 centimeters (near six feet) tall plays the role of a woman paralyzed from waist down in the movie "The Five" that will be released Thursday. Jeon Do-yeon in "Way Back Home" plays a woman who is falsely accused of carrying drugs and is locked up in a jail in a foreign country. She doesn`t give off charm of a femme fatal. Ha Ji-won performs a swordsmanship action at "Chosun`s Angels" that will be released in early next year,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "The Contact" 2013/11/02,
Produced at the cusp of the digital era, "The Contact" is a curious statement, not so much about digital relationships, but about the circumstances of modern life that seem to drive people toward these distant electronic connections. Dong-Hyeon (played by Han Seok-Kyu) is a cool radio DJ whose smooth demeanor gives him plenty of pull with the ladies. And yet the event that sets off the story is his distant effort to see if a recent acquisition is actually some sort of secret message from an old lover.
A distant loneliness pervades most of this film. It's most obvious in the music- it's undeniable that these are quality riffs, exactly the kind of sound a distinguished intelligent thinker would like to listen to, as they demonstrate the subtlety and nuance of daily emotional life,...More
[HanCinema's Film Talk] Siblings in Cinema: The RYOO Brothers 2013/07/06,
Siblings don't always get along. Even when working within the same field family members often choose to keep their personal and professional lives separate to keep the peace. Personal histories, grudges, and just knowing one another as well as they do can cause friction and frustration in the workplace. Not so though with renowned South Korean actor Ryoo Seung-beom and his moviemaking brother Ryoo Seung-wan. The brothers' most recent effort, "The Berlin File" (2013), marks another successful family collaboration that rocked Korean cinemas earlier this year.
The brothers both came into the spotlight with their 2000 début feature "Die Bad"; a collection of four hard-boiled short stories that follows two teenagers and their descent into the violent world of organised crime. The film was written and directed by Seung-wan and stars himself and his younger brother Seung-beom. Seung-wan has sometimes been described as the Korean Tarantino, while his talent younger brother has been likened too the American-Canadian comedy actor Jim Carrey,...More

There have been many films in recent Korean cinema capitalizing on the adrenaline rush of cat-and-mouse chases. An ambitious project brings together top actors Jeon Do-yeon and Jeong Jae-yeong for such a hunt.
"Countdown" remains true to its name in that it sets up a time restriction for a terminally ill bounty hunter (Jeong) to receive a liver transplant from a high-flying con artist (Jeon). Second visit to Busan and first time covering the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF). It is experience that is embarrassing to even be considered short. But instead feeling discouraged by the Busan natives and reporters who cover PIFF every year, the fireworks which went off at the start of the festival were watched with ease and excitement. It was probably from the anticipation felt from getting to meet directly with actors and directors who turned up at the show with their films as precious as their own child, and the satisfaction felt from being amongst the huge crowd seated at the venue,...More

What opened film "The Housemaid - 2010" was not the majestic mansion nor the elegant trail of a noblewoman's skirt we had seen through the still images or previews of the film revealed up till now. The film rather draws on women in a hurriedly-set up food alley in a new city who are cooking meat or handing out flyers to passers-by. And the moment the camera focuses on Eun-yi (played by Jeon Do-yeon), the only character who is seen smiling, one starts to feel an anticipation mixed with anxiety to see how this seemingly innocent female will change once she wears the clothes of a housemaid. Like director Lim Sang-soo said -- "I believe it isn't a remake of the original film" -- the new version of "The Housemaid - 1960" revealed at a press screening on Monday was quite different from the original production helmed by the late director Kim Ki-young. The 2010 version of "The Housemaid - 1960", which adopts its characters from its original film from 50 years ago, strongly poses the question of what it means to live like a human being by depicting on Eun-yi's struggles. Below are excerpts from the press screening of the film which is set for release on May 13,...More

Jeon Do-yeon was called the "Queen of Cannes" after she won the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the film "Secret Sunshine".
Although winning a trophy at Cannes cannot be the absolute criterion for anything, it is worth remembering that so far only two Asian actresses -- Jeon and Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung -- have been named best actress at a world-renowned film event like Cannes.

Ironically, Jeon had been single when she played a mother who had lost her son in "Sunshine" while she turned a mother when playing a maid who has an affair with a married man in "The Housemaid - 2010". Jeon met with Asia Economic Daily on April 19, prior to the film's opening, and talked about her husband, saying that "he believes me and wants me to stay as the actress I am. The appearance of director Kim Ki-young's 1960 film "The Housemaid" was an event in itself. It was an original attempt made amidst the rush of films based on literary works or the affection between lovers. The story of a house in which a young housemaid reminds the onlooker of a femme fatale, the wife who stands in contrast to the maid and the master of the house whose desires dangerously alternate back and forth between the two female characters, was a more strange and frightening experience than ever seen in a Korean film,...More

Actor Song Kang-ho [photographed by Beck Una/10Asia]
Beck: What did you find likeable and entertaining about the script for "Secret Reunion"? Song: Ten years ago, I did the films "Shiri" and "JSA - Joint Security Area" which are both about South Korea, North Korea and men. So, "Secret Reunion" was similar to them in a way, a similar story, but the overall outline of the movie is completely different from the previous films. The film doesn't treat the South-North division as its theme but rather takes an incredibly soft, light and sophisticated approach to it. I thought that was closer to how the audience currently feels about the division and there was something lovely about a North Korean spy and a former South Korean intelligence service agent living together. I don't think I would have done the movie if it dealt seriously about the division at times like now.
Beck:But didn't you choose to do the film because of the character or the role you would get to take on?,...More

It became certain last year that he had secured a position on the small screen when he made the hearts of many female viewers flutter through KBS drama "Boys over Flowers". Kim then showed how he had finally become a 'man' and one that is ready to play a lead role through SBS TV series "Dream - Drama". "Expressing a character is similar to trying on different clothes. The characters I played in 'Boys over Flowers' or 'Dream - Drama' were articles of clothing I tried on as a hanger or mannequin. They may not fit me initially since they may be too long or short but there comes a point when it fits you just right after some adjustment. That is when you look at yourself in the mirror and start being evaluated by others too for how you look in that item of clothing. Taking on a new role is like adding a new piece of clothing to your wardrobe so I must say that I'm very eager when it comes to work".,...More
