Based on perhaps the greatest western of all time, "The Good, the Bad, the Weird", last year's Korean blockbuster now out on DVD with English subtitles, has big shoes to fill. Here, the Confederate gold of the original is swapped out for a mysterious treasure depicted on a Russian map, which the Japanese army, the Korean independence fighters and a quirky group of Manchurian nomads are all pursuing.

In this new version, standing in for the Good is Park Do-won (Jeong Woo-seong), a bounty hunter hired by the Koreans to retrieve the map. The Bad is Park Chang-yi (Lee Byeong-heon), a pretty boy bandit who looks and acts a bit like a cross between Rain and Jack Sparrow, who starts out working for the map's double-crossing owner. The final piece - the "wei...| More

Top Korean movie star Jeong Woo-seong won best supporting actor's award at the third Asian Film Awards for his role in kimchi-western "The Good, the Bad, the Weird". Directed by Kim Ji-woon, the star-studded blockbuster was the highest grossing film in Korea last year. The film received eight nominations at the Asian Film Awards – best film, best director, best actor (Song Kang-ho), best supporting actors (Lee Byeong-heon, Jeong Woo-seong), cinematography, visual effects and best composer. Na Hong-jin's thriller hit "The Chaser" followed with three of its own nominations, but the film failed to win any. Another Korean film "Rough Cut", directed by Jang Hoon and starring So Ji-sub, also came away empty, but its star So did garner international attention by being nominated in the category of best newcomer.

In the meantime, Japanese films swept top honors at the Asian Film Awards, winning best film for "Tokyo Sonata", best director for Hirokazu Koreeda of "Still Walking", and best acto...| More

One of Korean cinema's early masters and one of the most important directors of the 60s and 70s, YU Hyun-mok, 84, will receive a retrospective at the 33rd Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF). The event, which opens March 22, will feature four of the director's finest films under the title 'The Realist Dao of YU Hyun-mok'.

Included are YU's first masterpiece, "The Aimless Bullet" (1961), voted by Korean critics as the best Korean film of all time; the moving and sensuous "Daughters of the Kim Pharmacy" (1963), based on a classic Korean novel; the cynical, modernist color gem "The Guests on the Last Train" (1967) and the tense, cold war microcosm, "Rainy Days" (1979).

Contemporary Korean films playing at the fest number eight this year. Indie favorite, "Daytime Drinking", was selected to compete in HKIFF's Asia Digital Competition section. The low budget debut feature by NOH Young-seok has drawn notice after winning at the Jeonju Int'l Film Fest and receiving a North...| More
