[HanCinema's Film Review] "Descendants of Hong Gil-dong" 2014/12/13,
Family is very important in South Korea, but also in its entertainment. It often plays a big role in many genres. 'Descendants of Hong Gil-dong' combines a family comedy with action and adds to it an ensemble cast capable of handling both. The trick to making such combinations work is making each one matter in the progression of the other. The end result here is pretty satisfying,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review + Video] "Once Upon a Time": A Rough Diamond Delight 2014/11/01,
On 6 August 1945 Prince Wu (the last remaining member of Korea's imperial family) was horseback riding to work in Hiroshima when, 44.4 seconds after a perfectly planned 08:15 release, America's 'Little Boy' and its uranium payload cruelly crushed any hopes of a royal revival. "Once Upon a Time" (2008) is set around these landmark lessons from WWII, and follows a revolutionary swindler (Park Yong-woo as Bong-goo) and a jazzy cat burglar (Choon-ja played by Lee Bo-young) as they con and scratch over a mythical diamond: "The Light of the East", 300k of coal from Korea's proud Silla dynasty (57 BCE – 935 CE), and the slippery object of desire driving this entertaining and edgy heist flick,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "Couples": Destined Love for Better or Worse... 2012/02/11,
Now, I am not usually the type to gorge myself on such things, but when I came across Jeong Yong-ki's 2011 film "Couples" I just had to see what he had in store in the romantic comedy department. I am happy to report that I enjoyed Yong-ki's offering and it is definitely worth a watch for anyone looking for a light-romantic comedy that, while still playing on a tried and tested structure, manages to feel fresh and enduring. With Valentines Day just around the corner, this might just be the romantically inclined cinematic candy to mark the occasion,...More
