Park Hyo-joo, first lead role in 6 years after debut through "Byul Soon Geom"

She is said to have debuted 6 years ago, but went rather unnoticed until the MBC drama series 'Air City' which ended in July.

Park Hyo-joo gathered attention through the role as Lee Jung Jae's junior NIS agent in 'Air City' also starring Choi Ji Woo. She was the playful and cool tomboy amongst a group of male agents. With her thin features, black suit, and short hair, she brought out the question amongst viewers, "Who is that?"

And she finally was cast as the main lead in the upcoming MBC DramaNet series "Joseon Scientific Investigation Team - Byul Soon Geom" with Oh Joo-Wan.

"It's like a dream. I am truly enjoying going to the set and they say it is difficult because it is a historical drama, but I'm just enjoying everything about it".

As an actress, she was different for the norm. I expected Park Hyo-joo to be tough from her image in 'Air City' but she was completely different in real life with her usual 'eye smile' but a lady indeed, long and lean.

Intensity and sense of purpose create the materials for a star

Actor Kim Myeong-min was thought to be an up-and-coming star after his debut in 1996 but his life went in a different direction. He was badly injured while performing a stunt and his film contracts kept being withdrawn. This series of unfortunate events led him to quit stage acting in 2004.
Ironically, the year he gave up his stage life was also the turning point in his career. He was given the opportunity to play the lead role in a historical drama called "Immortal Admiral Yi Sun-shin". The opportunity was a double-edged sword because viewers showered him with harsh criticism, saying he was not the best choice to play Joseon naval hero Lee Sun-shin. Nevertheless, the drama made him a star and he became extremely busy.
In January Kim appeared in "White Tower". He played Dr. Jang Jun-hyuk, a cold-hearted and intelligent figure who possesses a secret and contemptible ambition. With his quirky appearance and ambiguous good looks, Kim successfully embodied the character.

Jun Jin to star as main lead of MBC Dramanet historical series 'Byul Soon Geom (Chosun Police)'

MBC Dramanet announced on the 23rd that Jun Jin has been cast as the main lead of the 20 episode investigative documentary series 'Byul Soon Geom' ("Chosun Police").

In 'Byul Soon Geom' which follows the story of investigative procedures in the late Chosun era, Jun Jin will play the role of Kim Sa Yool, an elite detective with a sharp mind. He accepts the female lead character Seo Eun who is the daughter of his father's enemy.

The series originally aired in 2005 starring Jeong Yoo-Seok which at the time gathered popularity amongst mania viewers but ended early at six episodes.

MBC Dramanet commented, "We were able to create a new 20 episode series under the same title thanks to the support of the viewers".

Korean films' diverse genres pursue summer season niche

With the crucial summer season in full swing, Korean filmmakers are getting ready to mount counterattacks against Hollywood blockbusters in August. This time around, what is noticeable is Korean films' strategic discretion in selecting and diversifying genres.

In recent years, a handful of the so-called Korean blockbusters clashed with American counterparts, only to end up with not-so-spectacular results. "The Host", for instance, garnered a rare success at box office, while the majority of hit wannabes withered helplessly.

To find some niche ground and increase the odds for survival, major films releasing in August zoom in on selective genres such as sex, monster and horror. Of course, these genres are hardly groundbreaking, but considering the uniformity in genres of Korean films during the past summer seasons, the latest penchant for diverse genres is a welcome development.

Make Way for Byeolsungeom, the Columbo of Joseon

Perhaps because the Chuseok holiday is shorter than usual this year, there is a relatively small number of special TV dramas airing over the holiday weekend. The most notable among them is MBC's "Joseon Scientific Investigation Unit, Byeolsungeom".

Slated to air at 1:50 p.m. on September 18, "Byeolsungeom" is a fusion period drama: a police drama set in the late Joseon period. The term "Byeolsungeom" refers to police officers in civilian clothes who carried out special assignments under the jurisdiction of late-Joseon peacekeeping agencies such as the Gyeongmucheong and the Gyeongwiwon.

Forensic medicine in the Joseon period did not fall very far behind today's methods. In the period's forensic science book "Muwonrok", whose title means "eliminating grudges", one finds numerous descriptions of actual postmortem examinations.
