MBC's upcoming drama "Spotlight", which airs this Wednesday night, promises to bring back a bit of excitement to the small screen.

Following on the heels of its more-than-lackluster predecessor "Who Are You?", "Spotlight" focuses on the gritty and enterprising lives of city desk broadcast news reporters. The drama tracks one woman's rise to fame, from her struggles at the city desk to her eventual success as an anchorwoman.

With a plot like that, the success of "Spotlight" rides on the strength of its heroine and on its scripting.

And the script promises to be solid. The drama's writer Lee Ki-won possesses a finesse for drawing out the dark political power struggles that go on in the workplace. And his intense and cutthroat writing will play out well in the newsroom. Lee also wrote last year's hit medical drama "White Tower".

Among the new slate of talented young Korean directors, the brothers JEONG Beom-sik and JEONG Sik are among its leading exponents; the latest development around their debut film "Epitaph" (Gidam) is the sale of its distribution rights to North America (TLA Releasing), Hong Kong (Celestial Movies Channel) and Japan (CCRE) by Studio 2.0 at the Hong Kong Filmart.

Studio 2.0 also sold the rights of "Highway Star" (Bokmyeon Dalho), starring CHA Tae-hyeon, to Hong Kong (Celestial Movies Channel), China (H.G.C.) and Vietnam (Diamond Cinema). Animation "Aachi and Ssipak" was picked up by Spain's Notro and "Lovers of 6 Years" (Yooknyeonjjae Yeonae Joong) with KIM Ha-neul will be released in Vietnam (Diamond Cinema).

SEOUL, Oct. 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actor Jin Goo has joined the cast of the new Japanese drama "Joshi Deka!" (Female Detective!), his agency said Tuesday.

Byeollan Actors said, "Not only will Jin Goo play a special role starting from the 10th episode of 'Joshi Deka!', which begins broadcasting Thursday and stars famous Japanese actress Yukie Nakama, but he will also play an important role in the websodes".
Combining the words "web" and "episode", a websode is an extra episode online that spins off regular shows, such as the U.S. shows "Lost" and "Prison Break". The film "A Dirty Carnival", starring Jo In-seong, has drawn two million viewers just a month after its opening.

The movie's promotion company said July 19 that "A Dirty Carnival", which opened June 15 just in time for the World Cup fervor, has made a successful run in the domestic box-office on par with Hollywood blockbusters.

The movie's success can be attributed to the excellent directing skills of its director, "Yoo Ha", as well as the superior acting of its cast, which includes Jo, "Jin Goo", Nam Goong-min, Cheon Ho-jin and Lee Bo-yeong. Despite a somewhat heavy plot for a summer movie, "A Dirty Carnival" captivated viewers' hearts with its heartfelt story about real life. Adding to the movie's popularity was an active promotion campaign that lasted for three weeks after the film's opening. Jo in particular received rave reviews for his true-to-life portrayal of a gangster.

It is the dream of Byung-du aka "Number 3" (Jo In-seong), always ignored at the Rotary gang, to find a sponsor with plenty of cash and tidy up his failed life.
