Korean cartoons grow up and into lucrative animation industry

An old, driverless car approaches a young man, suddenly stands up, and transforms itself into a tall, talking robot armed with never-before-seen technology.

This is a scene from "Transformers", the recent Hollywood blockbuster directed by Michael Bay. The show features robots that can change themselves into any kind of vehicle to fight against evil robots out to takeover earth.

The movie and the original 1980s cartoon on which it is based captivated many robot enthusiasts, young and old.

The creative power behind the Transformers is Korean animator Nelson Shin, 67, the producer of the original Transformers cartoon and director of the 1986 Transformers movie. Dubbed "god of animators" in South Korea", Shin and the staff at his studio AKOM in Korea have also been drawing famous U.S. cartoon characters from "The Simpsons", "Dilbert" and "Pink Panther".

"Aachi & Ssipak" Director Returns with Mad Monkey

Animation Jo Beom-jin unveiled his latest work "Mad Monkey" at the 9th Puchon International Student Animation Festival earlier this month. The Animation feature was selected as the closing film.

"Mad Monkey" is about a super hero in Asia. The animation film is praised for its high quality graphics, a combination of 2D and 3D, and original story. "Mad Monkey" is produced by Korean animation studio Flying.

Jo debuted with "Aachi and Ssipak", a critical successful animation film with an unconventional story about two anti-heroes taking on the authorities.

Korean animation wins recognition in Spain

The Korean animation "Aachi and Ssipak" (2006) won the Best Animated Film Award at the 2007 Sigtes International Film Festival in Spain.

Studio 2.0 the distributor of the film said "Aachi and Ssipak", directed by Jo Beom-Jin, won the best animation award at the 40th Sitges Fantastic Cinema Festival on Sunday (Oct. 13).

The Sitges Fantastic Cinema Festival is one of three major fantastic cinema festivals in the world together with the Fantasporto Film Festival in Portugal and one in Brussels, Belgium.

Meanwhile another Korean movie, "I'm a Cyborg, but that's Ok" directed by Park Chan-wook, was selected as best script for this year. His other movie "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" also won a best actress award in 2005.

"Aachi and Ssipak" already won the Grand Prix at the 2007 Seoul International Comic Animation awards and was invited to various animation festivals abroad -- the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France and Seattle International Film Festival.

'Aachi and Ssipak' and four other animated films at the Ottawa International Animation Film Fest

Five Korean animations are representing the country at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in Canada, one of the world's four major international animation festivals.

The selected films are "Aachi and Ssipak" (Director: Jo Beom-Jin) in the Feature Film category; "Deady" [editor's note: is this really supposedly "Deady" or should it be "Deadly"?] (Director: Choi, Darang, et. al.), "Love is Moving" (Director: Oh, Sumin, et al.), and "The Fish" (Park, Kyoung-Mi) in the High School Animation category; and "Cat and Bear" (Director: Jo, Seong-Yoon and Jo, Se-Heon) in the Short Animation Made for Children category.

"Aachi and Ssipak" wins the grand prix at SICAF 2007

The animation "Aachi and Ssipak" (director: Jo Beom-Jin; production: JTeam Studio) won the grand prix at the 2007 Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival (SICAF 2007),which was concluded at the end of last month.

Of the more than 350 feature-length and short animation films invited from 41 countries and 169 official selections, "Aachi and Ssipak" competed against some of the best animated films such as "Yobi, The Five Tailed Fox" (Korea; director: Lee Seong-Gang), Lotte From Gadgetville (Estonia), and The Khan Kluay: Elephant King (Thailand), and won the grand prix for its storyline's uniqueness and creativity and exceptional quality.
