"Fabricated City" ends "Confidential Assignment"'s three-week run at the top...
After three weeks as Korea's number, Kim Seong-hoon-III's action film "Confidential Assignment" was supplanted at the top of the chart by a new local entry over the second weekend of February; Kim's sophomore feature added 543,401 admissions (22.9%) during its fourth week out, moving its total tally now to 7.2 million ($51.6 million), but it was not enough for country's highest-grossing film of the year to secure a fourth-straight weekend at the top of the pile,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "The King" 2017/02/11,
So you know that scene where the hero is about to start cleansing the world of evil, then the villain pops up and offers vast power for him to instead assist the forces of evil in ruling the universe? In "The King", that hero is low-born prosecutor Tae-soo (played by Jo In-Seong). That villain is high-ranking special prosecutor Kang-sik (played by Jo In-Seong). The scene happens early on, the twist being that Tae-soo accepts the offer, then proceeds to spend the rest of the movie as a largely passive observer,...More

[HanCinema's Korea Joa] Korean Cooking Class with Food Director Kim Su-jin-I 2015/11/21,
My trip to Korea was full of amazing opportunities. I went to the world-renowned BIFF 2015, saw multiple K-pop concerts, visited breathtaking historical sites both modern and ancient, and interviewed many fabulous people. But it was one woman's school and class that may have been the pinnacle of that experience: a Q&A and lesson with Chef and Food Director Kim Su-jin-I and Teacher Lee "Ellie" Hye-won of the Food & Culture Academy. The Q&A was a lesson in how Korean food embodies the spirit of its vivacious people and what makes Korean food unique. Then we, the members of Korea Joa 2015, got to make two quintessential Korean dishes: japchae and bulgogi. Those members with dietary restrictions learned how to make haemul jeon. Check the recipes out at the end of this piece,...More

Actors' salary this year 2015/09/03, Source,
Curiosity rose for actors' pay after actresses' pay was released last month. We've updated the ranks from highest paid actors to the lowest.
According to studies, the gap between actors and actresses isn't that large. In case of the actors, they are more highly paid as they have a strong fan base all over the world. The prices of actors continuously rise but the actresses fill in the gaps with fashion and beauty advertisements. After actors make it big with dramas, they make more money off extracurricular events such as foreign fan meetings and such so they make extra profits,...More
How Kim Tae-hee escaped from being the scapegoat 2015/08/24, Source,
In the past, Kim Tae-hee's sister worked at Namoo Actors for 2 years. It was a permanent position with insurance. She was helping the managers and her sister who was making 5 billion won a year. There was no reason for anyone to stop the sister from coming into work and helping out.
However, there was a lot of noise about this as there is no case where a celebrity and his or her family worked out well together. There was also the question of how well a blood-related family could be rational when it came to making decisions about work and money matters,...More
[Funcurve Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" 2015/06/27, Source,
Love Is Hope
I wasn't sure what to expect of "It's Okay, That's Love" at all after hearing that it's about psychiatrists and psychological patients. However the atypical topic did immediately pique my curiosity but also uncertainty of what direction the Korean drama will take. Romance? Mystery? Fantasy? I decided to take a leap of faith and put my trust in two of my all time favorite actors: Jo In-Seong and Gong Hyo-jin. I was not let down as the lead actors gave outstanding performances - so good that it was worth shedding tears for. The unexpected bonus was that many of the supporting characters were equally unique and memorable,...More

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 16 Final 2014/09/11,
Now that Jae-yeol's conflict has been mostly resolved, what else is there for the drama to do? We're not going to see the long, drawn-out recovery process, since that would be boring even if it's obviously important. And yes, it needs to be noted that there are in fact two timeskips here, and while Jae-yeol appears to have dealt with his problems by the time we get to the true ending, there's nothing particularly magical or unrealistic about his portrayal of happiness.
It's the kind of happiness we see that bothers me. Surprise surprise, now that the main interesting dramatic issue of "It's Okay, That's Love" has been resolved, it's right back to all the little annoyances that drove me crazy for the majority of the drama's run,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 15 2014/09/10,
This episode is all about false reassurance. Jae-yeol takes minor recovery in his condition as justification for early release with...well, not bad consequences exactly. There's no significant disaster this episode that forces another serious reevaluation. It's more a matter of Jae-yeol just taking a hard look at himself and discovering the situation is exactly as dire as the doctors say. Everything is meticulously scripted and shot to lead to this shining moment of self-discovery.
It's a huge building moment of humility for him. Remember that this is the same Jae-yeol who has an unimpeachable reputation as a dreamboat. His aggressive borderline illegal behavior has, to date, only ever gotten him good things in regards to his relationship with Hae-soo,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 14 2014/09/04,
Provided you saw the preview last episode, it's pretty easy to guess every major storyline event that happens this episode. Consequently, up until Jae-yeol finally gets committed, the proceedings are pretty uninspiring, and at their worst even invoke shades of the sociopathy that has defined the drama up until this point. Jae-yeol may not be consciously dangerous, but he's definitely a threat to himself and others and it's easy to feel sorry for the passerby minding their own business who got stuck into this, even if we never see them,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 13 2014/09/03,
Pretty much the entirity of this episode is devoted to the seriousness of Jae-yeol's mental condition, and I have to admit I was actually fairly surprised at how tastefully this was handled. So far the drama's exploration of psychiatric conditions has been pretty superficial. I guess that since Jae-yeol's a main character, though, there's a sort of gravity to what he's experiencing that for once requires everyone to actually act like a serious professional and calmly discuss the best way of getting him treatment.
Hae-soo undergoes a lot of conflict here, since it quickly becomes obvious that she will have to betray Jae-yeol's trust in the short term in order to get him long term treatment,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 12 2014/08/28,
Jae-yeol and Hae-soo still spend a disproportionate amount of energy discussing marriage- but note the change in context. This isn't an abstraction. They aren't talking about this on a radio show like this was some kind of expert discussion. These are personal conversations in a casual atmosphere that deal with their situation on an individual level. There's actual genuine rapport here that's surprisingly effective.
It's a good demonstration of how "It's Okay, That's Love" is getting at least some of the genre fundamentals down correctly,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 11 2014/08/27, Source,
Lot of talk about marriage this episode, and I have to admit, there's times I'm impressed at the new creative methods this drama keeps coming up with to agitate me. Secular discussion of the abstract concept of marriage tends to be a pretty lousy discussion prompt to begin with, but it's particularly annoying here given that neither of our main characters have any idea what a healthy marriage actually looks like. We just get a bunch of empty philosophizing, and even that's practically ignored by the cliffhanger.
Presumably this would be a lot more tolerable if I found these characters sympathetic or even particularly intelligent, but really, the drama's just tiresome on this point. Jae-yeol and Hae-soo seem to spend a lot more time talking about relationships than they do actually having a relationship,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 10 2014/08/21,
We get into more of Jae-yeol's tragic past in this episode, as the murder is shown in almost complete detail, at least from Jae-beom's perspective. But was it a murder? The more I think about it the less sense the whole situation makes. Their father was a known abuser. This can be corroborated, making it trivially easy for any half decent lawyer to make a claim of self defense. And even if Jae-beom refused to make that defense by insisting he didn't do anything, at the very least it would be a mitigating factor in sentencing. Add that in to Jae-beom being a minor and the lenient nature of the Korean criminal justice system in general...
Look, what I'm getting at here is that this entire portion of the plot only makes sense from a screenwriting perspective. Trying to apply any lateral logic to the situation at all just serves to demonstrate how little sense any of it makes,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 9 2014/08/20,
The Jae-yeol / Hae-soo loveline moves into a strong position of security here. The Okinawa trip concludes, and our leads return to Korea with a clear sense of mutual respect and understanding. For the most part this is just the natural progression of the sequence of events from the last episode. It's just a matter of a few serious chats, an airing out of various psychological issues, and there it is- intimacy.
There is not, at this point, anything that could be considered a serious emotional obstacle to the relationship. All of that was mainly on Hae-soo's end anyway,...More

They have become the most affectionate couple these days with 8 kisses and elegant actions of love. Even after arguing on a trip to Okinawa, they forgot about it soon and shared a kiss so deep and tingling that even the audience felt it,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 8 2014/08/14,
This episode is mostly just a fun date, so there's not a whole lot of objectionable material. It really does do wonders for the Jae-yeol / Hae-soo romance to just have them away from other people for a change. Without any targets to provoke for the most part these two are able to behave like sensible human beings who are more focused on one another's needs and happiness than in petty oneupsmanship,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 7 2014/08/13,
In the opening of this episode, in the aftermath of a mental patient's escaping due entirely to the fault of Dong-min, Hae-soo completely fails to notice that a man is being beaten by a baseball bat and dragged away right in front of her. Jae-yeol, for his part, rather than get help, manages to escalate the fight in such a way that it completely destroys a nearby unrelated private space. The situation is a terrifying one- not from the perspective of the drama, but rather from the onlookers,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 6 2014/08/07,
The romance narrative has now moved into the push the other person away, not sure what to do next phase. Which is a very good phase to get into, since I, at least, needed time apart from the antics of these two. Hopefully the next time we get into an intimacy upgrade there will be some genuine affection involved rather than the skeevy pick up techniques that Jae-yeol has been using so far,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 5 2014/08/06,
We're finally moving into the stage of the Jae-yeol / Hae-soo relationship where one of them actually starts acting like they like the other. Obviously it would be better if both of them would act like that, but I'll take what I can get. This episode gets one decent laugh near the start where Hae-soo, apparently still in her candid camera reverie, obviously has a complete tonal shift in the way she anticipates Jae-yeol's arrival,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 4 2014/07/31,
The cliffhanger of the last episode was mildly creepy. The opening of this episode continues in that direction, quickly becoming really creepy. I genuinely have no idea how to view Jae-yeol's actions here. Are these gestures supposed to be romantic? Then why do they feel so vaguely threatening? I might be able to accept this kind of playfulness from long separated lovers but these two quite literally met each other only a few episodes ago. I'm surprised Hae-soo puts up with it, considering how she never puts up with anything else,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 3 2014/07/30,
The drama continues to struggle against its main obstacle- the general unlikability of the main characters. I get that their antics are supposed to be cute, but most of the time I just end up thinking that these are not people I would ever want to be roommates with. Hae-soo takes vicious snipes and Jae-yeol chooses to escalate them. Living with one of them would be difficult enough- both at the same time is just plain worrisome,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 2 2014/07/24,
Jae-yeol and Hae-soo have a natural dislike of each other, among countless other obstacles, and "It's Okay, That's Love" is doing everything it can to slowly whittle these hindrances down. First up is the inconvenient fact of how both Jae-yeol and Hae-soo currently have significant others. The drama wastes no time in destroying both these relationships quite spectacularly. I mean, wow, yeah they were in the way, but wasn't this a little harsh?,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 1 2014/07/23,
To the uninitiated viewer, the initial events of "It's Okay, That's Love" will probably come off as pretty scatalogical. We get a prison, a giant massive party, what looks like the set for some kind of commercial, a hospital, and finally, a television variety show, all of this before the drama's even had much of a chance to explain what's actually going on. It's not literally a commercial, by the way. That was just an assumption I made based on how sexily that particular scene was shot,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "The Classic" 2014/03/01,
The immediate standout quality of "The Classic" is its musical score. The sound weaves effortlessly between classical beats and more modern ones, marking a constant shift in situations. In the rustic countryside of South Korea, a certain beauty is built up to by the slowly rising frequency of the tones. Meanwhile, city life moves according to a quicker more modern beat. In either case, the quality of the sound reflects that same feeling of general life, of being young, and the hopeful optimism that's all too infectious regarding those bygone days.
Then actual conflicts start showing up in the story and all this stuff starts to get rather weird and annoying,...More

Q: You must be quite determined since this is the first drama you're taking on since being discharged from the military.Cheon Jeong-myeong (Cheon): While I was in the military, I had mentioned to Jo In-Seong that I would like to take on a certain type of drama and it was similar in certain ways with "Cinderella's Sister". So I was happy when I got the part. I do feel pressured because reports have been saying I'm making a comeback for the first time in four years. I'm just focusing on my acting for now. Q: What was it about "Cinderella's Sister" that worked for you? Cheon: I personally had wanted to do a film but had told Jo that it may be better to do a drama first since the reaction comes faster. After I made up my mind to take on a drama, I thought hard over which I should do. I didn't think I would be ready to take on genres outside youth romance so "Cinderella's Sister" worked for me in that aspect too. And more than anything, I liked the producer and scenarist. My close actor friends, such as Ko Hyun-jung and Jo In-Seong, had been in dramas by Kim Gyoo-wan. They said I'd have a hard time because my lines would be long but they told me it would be great and it would be an honor for me. Gi-hoon wasn't supposed to play such a big part in the drama. That's why I thought a newcomer would play the female role opposite me. But the script got changed the more I talked with the scenarist and my role got better,...More

Korean actress Lee Bo-young [photographed by Chae Ki-won/10Asia]
A poster shoot for "Harvest Villa" was taking place at a studio in Nonhyun-dong of Seoul. The actors, each already full of character, displayed facial expressions that summarized the roles they had taken for the drama and drew curiosity by simply standing still in front of the camera. Actor Baek Yoon-shik, who plays the problem-solver in the drama, expressed his concern by saying, "Make me look sturdy". But once he went into shoot, he put on a tough guy-like appearance and looking relaxed, remarked "Should I act like I just killed about 50 people?" But it was actress Lee Bo-young, who plays the female lead in the drama and looked cheerful throughout the photo shoot, that stood out more than anyone at the studio. Her character Seo-rin approaches Bok-gyu (played by Sin Ha-gyoon) pretending to be the perfect woman but she actually works in the adult entertainment business. Here we reveal the stories Lee told us about "Harvest Villa".
