 By Kim RahnStaff Reporter Actor Joo Ji-hoon was given a suspended jail term and community service after he was convicted of illegal drug use. The Seoul Central District Court sentenced the 27-year-old Tuesday to a six-month prison term suspended for one year, 120 hours of community service and 360,000 won in fines. Joo was indicted without physical detention last month for taking ecstasy tablets and ketamine at model-turned-actor Ye Hak-yeong's home in Seoul in April last year. "The drug use of a celebrity like Joo can exert an evil influence on society, because people, especially juveniles, can follow his behavior, and ecstasy and ketamine are relatively cheap and easy to obtain compared with other narcotics", the court said.  By Park Si-sooStaff Reporter The prosecution sought one year in prison and 440,000 won ($350) in fines, Tuesday, for popular actor Joo Ji-hoon, who was indicted on charges of illegal drug use. Three other entertainers prosecuted along with Joo on the same charges also face a possible prison term ranging from five years to seven years. Joo, 27, was indicted without physical detention in late April on charges of taking ecstasy in March 2008 during parties with fellow entertainers. Joo was present at the Seoul Central District Court at 2 p.m. along with his lawyer and security guards to participate in the first court hearing. He pled guilty to all charges against him. | "The Naked Kitchen" is confused about what it wants to be. From the cover of the DVD, it looks like a cheesy culinary romantic comedy, complete with simpering stars. But from its synopsis, it sounds like a racy love triangle with a wanton wife at the center. The identity crisis continues through the duration of the film, most apparently in its female star, Sin Min-ah, as Mo-rae, the aforementioned unfaithful spouse. Upon receiving a copy of the DVD, a co-worker passing my desk said, "Oh, Sin Min-ah, she's so cute". Therein lies the problem. Sin is utterly unconvincing in her role as a cheater. Are we honestly supposed to believe that the prancing, parasol-peddling Mo-rae would actually cuckold her husband, Sang-in? And rather than making the situation more believable, the film's ensuing character development - that Mo-rae was a virgin before marriage and that Sang-in is her enduring childhood love - makes her actions even more preposterous. Staff Reporter Entertainers, university students and foreign English lecturers have been caught using drugs in public places, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) Wednesday. The agency's drug squad said it was seeking arrest warrants for 12 people after booking 72 for using narcotics at clubs in Gangnam and Itaewon. Following the booking of popular film star Joo Ji-hoon, 27, actress Yoon Seol-hee, 28, and model Ye Hak-yeong, 26, for drug use in April, police apprehended three more entertainers for taking drugs smuggled in from Japan. "The entertainers are singers and actors", a police officer said. "The list includes an actor currently starring in a drama, but we cannot disclose any identities during an investigation". They put ecstasy tablets in drinks and took them in groups of three or four in private rooms in clubs as well as in public, he said. The popular model and actor Joo Ji-hoon is among 15 people booked on drugs charges, police said Monday.
Police also arrested an actress identified as Yoon on suspicion of supplying ecstasy to acquaintances and selling them in clubs, and are questioning her about allegations that she sold drugs to entertainers other than those already indicted. A Seoul Metropolitan Police spokesman said five of the 15 were acquaintances of Yoon's, while the rest allegedly obtained the drugs elsewhere. Police said more people could be indicted as the investigation expands. "Although it is relatively easy to get the drugs Yoon brought into Korea in clubs in Japan, it is shocking that an actress smuggled and distributed them herself", a police officer said.
