[HanCinema's Film Review] "El Condor Pasa - 2014" 2016/07/23,
Soo-ha (played by Kang Ye-won) is a grumpy woman who inherits an obscure rural road stop that has trouble attracting customers. The location is bad, the food is bad, and Soo-ha doesn't even particularly want to be there but who would want to buy this kind of property? Lacking any other ideas, Soo-ha eventually decides to grant temporary residence to the Ecuadoran band Kawsay, who apparently wander the South Korean peninsula looking for food and lodging while offering only their traditional Ecuadoran wisdom in return,...More

Marvel's "Civil War" takes no prisoners...
Marvel Studios' much-anticipated "Captain America: Civil War" arrived in Korea last Wednesday and over the weekend this blockbuster was the only game in town. The film was allocated an incredible 1,990 screens and attracted 2.7 million filmgoers for a whopping 90.5% of the box office pie. Already "Civil War" has amassed 3.9 million admissions in Korea alone ($28.7 million), and globally Marvel's latest superhero flick has banked over $200 million. Western superhero films are very popular the world over, and Korea is no exception, and its dominance over the weekend left very little for the rest of fray to fight over,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Insane" 2016/04/23,
Nam-soo (played by Lee Sang-yoon) is a producer working for a late night horror show that involves ghosts. Not real ghosts, just actors in ghost make-up. Nam-soo is irritated by the low prestige nature of this work, and quickly takes up the track of investigative journalism when a freak discovery at a shooting location begs a lot of important questions. This trail ends up leading to a mental patient (played by Kang Ye-won) who is identified in hospital records as Soo-ah. The extent to which any of these records are accurate, well, that's part of the mystery,...More

Local thriller "Insane" comes out on top as DC's heroes free fall...
The aftermath of "Batman v Superman" has not been kind to DC's crossover collision as admissions counts continue to drop despite the film's initial hype and massive fanbase. Last weekend the bombastic action of DC's latest enjoyed its second weekend out atop the Korean box office, but week three for Zack Snyder's superhero film was incredibly underwhelming,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Haeundae" + DVD Giveaway 2015/09/19,
I first saw "Haeundae", not from start to finish, but beginning midway through on cable television. There were, as to be exected, a lot of special effects about a giant tidal wave destroying everything. Given that the press materials have always pretty explicitly tried to sell the product as a disaster film, this should come as little surprise. Then I tried watching the movie from the very beginning and made a shocking discovery. "Haeundae" is, in fact, a romantic comedy,...More

The $280 billion film added an additional 804 admissions (52%) to its cause, bringing its total tally in South Korea now to 9.3 million admissions (or $73 million). Currently, "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" has grossed over $875 million worldwide,...More
"Love Clinic" Oh Ji-ho is all full of love 2015/05/06, Source, "I worried a lot. "Love Clinic" isn't an easy genre. I could be defaming myself. But I watched the movie and thought otherwise. People around me say it's fun and it's fun to talk about it. It's not an opportunity that comes by every day".
Oh Ji-ho is a handsome, smart and sexy gynecologist named Wang Seong-gi who knows women on the 'inside' but not enough. Kang Ye-won plays Gil Sin-seol a urologist who examines men on their sensitive parts but hasn't had a proper relationship experience,...More
"Love Clinic" Kang Ye-won, "Aromi is cool" 2015/05/05, Source, Kang Ye-won, or Aromi as she is nicknamed, is pretty cool unlike the person we saw dropping tears out of her big eyes in the TV show "Real Men".
Kang Ye-won plays Gil Sin-seol, a urologist who hasn't had much experience in relationships in the adult rated comedy "Love Clinic". The movie is about a man and a woman who look normal on the outside but are defected inside. Wang Seong-gi (Oh Ji-ho) is a gynecologist who is physically defected because of a trauma and Gil Sin-seol only know men on the outside but not on the inside. This comedy romance may look obvious but it's not,...More
Kang Ye-won, "I've seen Oh Ji-ho's butt" 2015/04/30, Source, Kang Ye-won aroused the studio with her witty talk on the JTBC TV show "Witch Hunt".

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Bad Guys" 2014/12/27,
Following the format shift seen in this year's "Reset", OCN has brought us another serial drama, meaning one focusing on a main plot, rather than offering one case per episode. Much like the "Special Affairs Team TEN" series, "Bad Guys" lacks a supernatural gimmick. What this gives us is 11 episodes of pure action, a lot of character development and an intricate main plot. With all of these elements combined for optimal story richness, the only question left is whether that combination worked,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "My Ordinary Love Story" 2014/07/28,
Eun-jin (played by Kang Ye-won) has had a long series of abortive efforts at genuine romantic relationships. Ever met somebody who says that bad relationships are just learning experiences until you find the right person? Eun-jin is the opposite of that. Listening to Eun-jin detail the first six romances of her life, it's pretty inescapable that we're dealing with a woman who has become horribly bitter and jaded by the entire dating process. Her current boyfriend, Hyeon-seok (played by Song Sae-byeok) is remarkable mainly for being able to get in with her at all- he has no apparent personality traits,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "The Huntresses" 2014/01/25,
This is a silly movie. The first we see of leading lady Jin-ok (played by Ha Ji-won), she is doing a very bad job crossdressing as a man, wearing the most preposterous fake moustache I've ever seen. This is deliberate. Believe me, this movie makes an excessive effort in the wardrobe department. The entire final act of the movie is a visual treat of extras wearing absurd historical costumes from countries that appear to have been selected at random. The white suits the leads wear for the final act look horribly impractical for the job they're supposed to be doing. But who am I to argue about fashion?
Now, as to the plot...well, let's see. The bad guy has found a doohickey that he wants to sell to the Chinese,...More

[HanCinema Feature] Historical Hysteria: Korean period films coming in 2014 2014/01/11, Joseon pirates, legends, swordsmen, angels and more coming our way in 2014...
Cinematic journeys back to Joseon and beyond have rewarded the Korean film industry with a string of profitable historical yarns, a trend that has got producers drooling with the prospect of tapping deeper into this regenerative cash cow. Recently, it's been Han Jae-rim's "The Face Reader" (9.1M admissions) that has had locals flustered and, in 2005, it was Lee Joon-ik's "The King and the Clown" that became the first Joseon-era flick to pass the 10 million admissions mark. It's big business with a cultural twist that locals enjoy supporting, international audiences love lapping up, and a trend that 2014 is keen to take advance of as a host of new retrospectives are getting raring to go,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "Ghost Sweepers" 2012/12/30,
There's many directions a story can go when ghosts and exorcists get involved. There's the always reliable horror element, taking advantage of the human fear of the unknown. There's tragic character study because hey, death is kind of depressing, you know? And then there's the wacky slapstick comedy, which can go all sorts of fun directions since ghosts aren't beholden to such inconveniences as the laws of physics. "Ghost Sweepers" is a movie that attempts to do all three,...More
[Spoiler] "The Thousandth Man": Episode 8 (Final) Recap 2012/11/16, Source,
And here we have it, the finale. It's all done and I feel a little empty as I always tend to feel after a drama that I enjoy finishes. It definitely brought everything to a close in a way I can accept.
But the episode was also a lot weaker than the others. I think they could've spaced some things out over a few of the earlier episodes.
However, my favorite moment of the entire series is in this episode and it makes up for everything. It was so beautifully done that even thinking about it brings tears to my eyes. *sob*
We end the series at 3.2% according to AGB Nielsen Nationwide. Ignore that!,...More
[Spoiler] "The Thousandth Man": Episode 7 Recap 2012/11/09, Source,
This episode had a lot crammed into it and moved a little fast for me. But it's a television show and only eight episodes at that, so I'll cut it some slack. I really love the family element that it has going, but the romance has been put aside for the mystery that is Gu Mi-jin. I hope we bring back the romance in the last episode because, well, that's why Mi-jin is willing to die, right?
Oh yes, ratings went up to 4.5% according to AGB Nielsen Nationwide.,...More
[Spoiler] The Thousandth Man: Episode 4 Recap 2012/10/05, Source,
Feelings are made more obvious and made me all mushy inside. Time is also running out, which ups the ante and heightens emotions. This episode's potential liver donor explores the kind of men who should only be viewed from a distance because up close they are all sorts of icky.

The Thousandth Man: Episode 2 Recap 2012/09/16, Source,
This episode dropped 5.1% according to AGB Nielsen Nationwide. I totally don't get it. The show just got cuter. A few not-so-surprising secrets were revealed, but I feel close enough to the characters to let the mundane tropes slide. Hyomin was particularly adorable this episode. (Boo T-ara scandals. Just enjoy the show, peeps). Lee Chun-hee's smile makes me all giggly and Kang Ye-won has a wicked smirk,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "Quick" 2011/08/06, Jo Beom-goo's latest action comedy film "Quick" is currently occupying the number two slot in Korea's weekly box office. Let's begin with the end.
The anticipated summer blockbuster "Quick" had Korean viewers, who can be usually seen impatiently darting toward exits before the end, glued to their seats until well after the credits stopped rolling.
It wasn't so much that it was a particularly mind-blowing experience. Certainly some 70 secondhand cars and 30 motorcycles were sacrificed for a string of blast scenes, but it was because filmmakers decided to show how much pain the stuntmen and women had to endure for the project,...More
