  • [HanCinema Feature] Framing Korea: Moving Pictures and Foreign Knowledge

    2015/02/07,
What can we know about Korea through its cinema? If you were to have asked me that question some years ago, when I first I broke my Korea seal on Kim Dong-bin's fear flick "Red Eye", my answer would have probably been overly simplistic and unrefined, as yet unaware of the stellar symphony of Han-hardened beliefs about a world that underpinned this first trip; of a world that would still need to take shape before eyes. "Red Eye" (2004) felt immediately 'other' to me. It appeared as an alien message curiously contained and coded within the familiar language of pictures in motion,...More
  • [HanCinema's Film Review + Video] "Red Eye": A Terrible Trip Down Memory Lane

    2014/09/27,
My introduction to Korean cinema was less than stellar. It wasn't "Old Boy", "Memories of Murder", or "The Host" (i.e. some or other respectable modern masterpiece), but the trope-driven train wreck "Red Eye". I recently stumbled across this overzealous zeitgeist again on Viki.com, and my nagging nostalgia turned against my better judgement and I fired it up,...More

    2013/03/16,
It was eight years after "Red Eye" that Kim Dong-bin decided that another stab at his own version of 'locked room' horror was in order. This time around Kim moves from a haunted train carriage to a more classic cabin in the woods setting. "Two Moons" (aka "The Sleepless") did managed to surpass Kim's previous horrific effort, which many consider to be one of the most unimpressive additions to the periodic K-horror wave. Here though he attracted more than three times as many viewers. Sadly that still only put the film on 426,574 admissions, as Kim continues to be haunted by a few dogged ghosts of his own,...More
