The 3rd Global Culture Industry Forum will be held in Seoul on Oct. 26 and 27 jointly by the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange (KOFICE) and the Federation of Korean Industries.

The forum will bring leaders of the culture industry from nine nations--including the U.S., Germany, China and Japan--together to talk about the present and future of the cultural content business under the theme of the "New Formula Global Culture: Asian Contents Business + α".

A total of 27 panelists will give presentations and hold discussions over five sessions. Michael Hong, the president of U.S'.s Imagine Asia TV, will demonstrate a simulation of Korea businesses entering the U.S. media market under the topic of obstacles that minority channels face in the U.S. market. Korean star Jang Dong-gun stands poised to take China by storm when "The Promise", a pan-Asian production surrounded by massive advance hype debuts on some 500 screens there on Dec.15. "The biggest release ever was for 'Hero', which debuted on some 400 screens", co-producer and domestic copyright owner Showeast president Kim Dong-joo said. "That the film is being given such a wide release at the height of the Chinese theater season shows just how much confidence the Chinese have in the film's promotion".

"The Promise" will debut on the same day in Hong Kong and Taiwan as well -- a chance for Jang to secure his position as a major "Korean Wave" star.

The W30-billion (US$30 million) fantasy action film aimed at the world market is directed by Chinese-born heavyweight Chen Kaige. Top stars Bae Yong-joon and Son Ye-jin will tour 10 Asian countries during the August-September period to promote their new movie "April Snow". In a June 9 interview with Star News, CEO Kim Dong-joo of ShowEast, the company that produced the movie, reported that the movie will open concurrently in all 10 countries on Sept. 9.

The promotion tour will include Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, China and Indonesia. Asian fans are already looking forward to seeing Bae, their favorite "hallyu" star. Bae, Son and their agency Blue Storm are currently finalizing the details of the tour schedule.

The filming of "April Snow", a melodrama directed by Heo Jin-ho and starring Bae and Son as the leads, is near completion, with only a few scenes left be shot in Seoul. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism said yesterday it will bestow decorations on the director, lead actor and producer of "Old Boy", a hit movie that grabbed the runner-up Grand Prize of the Jury at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
The honors, which will be awarded Friday, are to recognize the contribution the movie made in the international cinema world, enhancing the image of Korean films and their reputation for artistic quality, the ministry said.

Culture Minister Chung Dong-chea is to confer on director Park Chan-wook, 41, the Bogwan Order of Culture Merit, the third highest honor in the culture decoration category.

Main actor Choi Min-sik, 42, and Showeast CEO Kim Dong-joo, who produced the film, will receive Okgwan Order of Culture Merit, the fourth highest honor, the ministry said.

After graduating from Sogang University with a degree in philosophy, director Park began his movie career as a film critic before becoming an assistant director in 1988 on "Kkamdong".

The local film "Old Boy" won the grand prize of the jury at the 57th Cannes Film Festival in May. Now, the makers behind the film are set to be honored by the government for their achievement.

Chung Dong-chae, minister of Culture and Tourism, will present Park Chan-wook, director of "Old Boy", with the Bo-Gwan Order of Culture Merit, the third highest award of its kind, on July 30 at the minister's office.

Also during the ceremony, the film's main actor, Choi Min-sik, and producer Kim Dong-joo will each receive the Og-Gwan Order of Culture Merit, which is one level lower than the Bo-Gwan.

Based on a Japanese comic book, the film revolves around a man looking for revenge after being kidnapped and incarcerated in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing the reason.

Park is well known for his previous movies like the 2000 blockbuster "JSA -Joint Security Area" and the 2002 drama "Poksu-nun Na-ui Kot (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance)". Choi is ...
