'Let's Queer!' Film Fest to Open in Central Seoul

A collection of unusual love stories shakes up Myeong-dong in the "Let's Queer!" film festival with 12 original works at multiplex theater CQN, July 16-22.

Ranging from coming-of-age teen dramas to cult classics and a collection of Korean short films, the festival line-up provides a spectacular introduction to the world of gay films.

In the Taiwanese film "Eternal Summer" (2006), two childhood friends slowly grow apart when a newcomer enters their circle and the love triangle goes horribly wrong. As the three friends grow up, new feelings come to light, making everything very different. Viewers are in for a real treat __ the director and stars will drop by to give a talk and greet fans before screenings at 8:30 p.m. on July 21 and 3:00 p.m. July 22.

`Hypnotized': A Journey Into Madness

"Olgulopnun Minyo (Hypnotized)" is a psychosexual drama that is as beautifully flawed as the mental state of its terminally sad characters. The film takes a highly experimental approach to storytelling that, when it works, feels like you're being enveloped in another person's madness. When it doesn't, however, the film turns into a frustrating and confusing movie-going experience.

"Hypnotized" is directed by Kim In-sik, who has made huge strides as a filmmaker since debuting with "Road Movie" two years ago. Kim shows surprising confidence in his manipulation of imagery and mood as he maps out his characters' descent into insanity.

The film also boasts standout performances by the leads, particularly Kim Hye-soo. Though the media has talked more about Kim's nude scenes _ the first in her career _ her complex portrayal of Jin-su, a woman grappling with insanity, should be remembered when awards are handed out at the end of the year.

'Hypnotized' uncovers vulnerabilities in love

Glasses, a clock, pencils, a lamp and other sundry objects float around in a surreal atmosphere. Timelessness shrouds the room. Suddenly, everything floating in the air drops, breaking into pieces. Shards of glass pierce the delicate skin of a woman. What's really hurt, however, is not her body but her lonely heart.
"Hypnotized" ("Eolgul eopneun minyeo") opening this Friday, explores the fragility of the human heart when love is denied. Few words can describe the pain when love is entirely rejected and there is no possibility of having your love returned in this lifetime.

In the film, Ji-su (Kim Hye-soo) leads a troubled life because of her peculiar illness - a borderline personality disorder. Borderline patients tend to have almost unlimited fear of being rejected by the people around them. At the same time, they always feel that they may soon lose their loved ones.
