Indie succeeds through alternative distribution

Hanna Lee's independent film "Sleeping Beauty" attracted close to 200,000 viewers through a combination of a cinematic release and internet downloads, according to film company Kino-eye on 24 December, "In Korea, independent produced films are usually released on a small scale, commonly recording about 1,000 spectators at the box office, and after its release it's often difficult to have a chance to see the film".

"Sleeping Beauty" was released cinematically in October 2008 and achieved an attendance number of 9,000 viewers. After the release in theatres, instead of disappearing, the film was made available online. Until 22 December, the indie film's paid downloads accumulated 10,000 times. Kino-eye said that the total number of viewers is nearing 200,000 because of the unconventional formula of a cinematic release followed by online distribution.
