[HanCinema's Hall of Fame Review] "The Servant": A Romantic Rendition with a Classic Twist 2014/05/24, In the Spotlight this Week:Kim Dae-woo's "The Servant"…
Kim Dae-woo's third feature "Obsessed" was recently released in Korea, and despite having to square off against the American monstrosity "Godzilla" his latest is still hijacking hearts and putting plenty of bums on seats. Like the gargantuan ghost currently conquering the West, Kim enjoys re-imagining the past and twisting the record for our modern amusement. In 2010 Kim took on the challenge of re-telling Chunhyangjeon, one of Korea's most beloved folktales; a pansori-inspiring piece that's been adapted to the big screen before, most notably by the prolific Im Kwon-taek. Kim, however, has a particular flair for romantic distortion, and his version delightfully deviates from the classic narrative to splendorous effect,...More

Actress Kim Ji-soo is drawing female viewers from their 30s to 60s to the SBS drama "Kind Words", which airs twice a week. As the soap approaches its halfway point, it is rising in popularity due to its in-depth portrayal of extramarital affairs in a way that is mature and subtle rather than exploitative. "It does not simply deal with affairs, but also the rehabilitation of wounded hearts in times of tension when such affairs happen. It deals with their psychological struggles and emotional changes in quite a sophisticated way", said drama critic Yoon Seok-jin,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] Returning to the Sunny side of Love. 2013/07/27,
Korean films are particularly intrigued by the tragic tests time and memory can place on love. This fascination extends across genres and the results are often not the Hollywood fairy tale viewers might come to expect. We see this in recent films like "The Servant", where Choon-hyang (Korea's 'Juliet' played by Jo Yeo-jeong) suffers a devasting physical trauma that leaves her mentally and emotionally incapacitated, no longer able to remember the love and passion she once had for her forbidden lover Bang-ja (Kim Joo-hyeok). In Park Chan-wook's cult classic "Old Boy" Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is confronted with an impossible decision at the end, one that cruelly pits the love for his daughter against his own sanity. (I think it will be highly interesting to see how Spike Lee's version of the story's ending differs to Park's). There are other examples of how time and love collide in Korea cinema, often with truly memorable results, and recently I returned to one of the most successful dramas in recent years: Kang Hyeong-cheol's "Sunny - 2010",...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "Couples": Destined Love for Better or Worse... 2012/02/11,
Now, I am not usually the type to gorge myself on such things, but when I came across Jeong Yong-ki's 2011 film "Couples" I just had to see what he had in store in the romantic comedy department. I am happy to report that I enjoyed Yong-ki's offering and it is definitely worth a watch for anyone looking for a light-romantic comedy that, while still playing on a tried and tested structure, manages to feel fresh and enduring. With Valentines Day just around the corner, this might just be the romantically inclined cinematic candy to mark the occasion,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "In Love and the War": Cross-border Love and an Elephant. 2011/11/19,
I remember looking at the film poster for "Hello Ghost" and seeing the stamp on it that read: "2010 Happy Comedy". A comedy is was, but it was also a deeply saddening tale that tickled the tear ducts. Happy tears, for sure, but it was not the emotion I was expecting to feel. Having had that experience, I now view Korean film posters with a pinch of salt in terms of how accurately they capture a film's emotive essence. "In Love and War" looks to be all cheers and chuckles but the filmmakers are definitely aiming for a specific emotional reaction from their audience outside of the it's silliness and comedic posturing,...More
