  • [HanCinema's Film Review] Tasty Money

    2013/01/19,
Film: " The Taste of Money" 돈의 맛 (Don-eui Mat) Director:  Lim Sang-soo Stars:   Kim Kang-woo, Baek Yoon-sik, Yoon Yeo-jeong & Kim Hyo-jin Review Score:  2.5 / 5 Lim Sang-soo came back from the 2012 Cannes Film Festival bitter and dispirited as "The Taste of Money" received the lowest average rating from their panel of internal critics. This, Lim's fifth film, also struggled at the Korean box office with a mere 1,162,699 admissions as this 'spirited' sequel to his 2010 remake "The Housemaid - 2010" failed to perform both local and abroad. Last year the Korean box office was smothered with sexy thrillers and dramas, some more successful than others, leaving many cinephiles and critics to question the significance and scope of such provocative films. Lim's 2010 remake of "The Housemaid" was also met with scepticism and received a lot of public attention due to its uninhibited portrayal of the salacious and disturbing world of Korea's wealthy elite. Those who caught Lim's modern interpretation of Kim Ki-young's 1960s classic will instantly recognise the film's grand and opulent veneer as the fantastically rich play with power, money, sex, and, of course, fire.,...More
  • Commedia dell'arte - with a Korean twist

    2012/12/16, Source,
Truffaldino, center, played by Baek Won-gil, is embarrassed when his two masters, Beatrice, right, and Florindo meet. Provided by the theater Hundreds of years ago, when Korea was a strict hierarchical society, the word "servant" was not used as often as it was in the West; those in the low rungs of the horizontal Confucian class structure were taken for granted to the extent that they were not even referred to by their vocation. Such a lack of identity and individuality has provided fodder for the imaginative minds of writers, with the servant-master relationship featured prominently in Korean works like Kim Ki-young's "Housemaid" (1960) and the 2010 remake by Im Sang-soo,...More

Director Lim Sang-soo's "The Taste of Money" distribution rights in North America has been sold to IFC. This movie shows the corruption of rich people with sex, authority and killings. Kim Kang-woo appears as the assistant of Yoon Yeo-jeong's chairman husband Baek Yoon-sik and acts as her sex toy,...More
  • Watch classic Korean films online from Korean Film Archive

    2012/06/29, Source,
Usually when you meet a fan of Korean cinema, you'll find their list of favorite films peppered with some of the obvious: "Old Boy", "Memories of Murder", "My Sassy Girl", "The King and the Clown" and "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... And Spring". But then, what about the classics? The great Korean films from decades ago? Until now, it was quite difficult to view these films, even in Korea. Either you had to subscribe to a movie TV channel, purchase DVDs (not that all films are available, either), or do as the hardcore film buffs do and scour the arthouse theaters and go to film festivals. If you're not in Korea or live in a community where access to Korean culture is quite non-existent; this would not be an easy task,...More
