Korea-Japan Business Campus Takes Place in Jeju

KOFIC is hosting a 4-day business campus for Japanese and Korean producers at a resort on the balmy island of Jeju, south of the Korean mainland. Taking place July 8 – 11, the campus brings together 5 Korean and 5 Japanese producers each with projects in development.

Highlights of the itinerary include intensive seminars for the producers on Korea-Japanese co-productions, along with expert guest speakers, such as CJ Entertainment's foreign investment manager who will speak on co-production financing.

Among the 5 Korean participants are Jonathan KIM, a leading producer in the industry with films such as "Lies", "Silmido", "Monopoly", and several co-productions including "Virgin Snow" behind his belt. Also attending is KIM Mi-hee of production house Sidus FNH. She has produced such films as the sci-fi action hit "Arahan" and the Chosun mystery "Blood Rain".

Economic Deputy Prime Minister Kwon, Ohgyu visits KOCCA

Kwon, Ohgyu, the Deputy Prime Minister of Economy, paid the office of the Korea Culture & Content Agency (director Seo, Byeonbgmun) in Yeoksam-dong an afternoon visit on the 26th.

The Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Kwon listened to the general briefing on Korea's culture and contents industry titled 'The Trend of Culture & Contents Industry in the Era of Globalization' presented by Seo, Byeongmun, the director of Korea Culture & Content Agency.

He also attended a high-powered meeting with 10 important figures from the culture and contents industry including, Lee Hyun-seung, the CEO of Blue Cinema, Kim Mi-hee, CEO of Sidus, and Kim Il-ho, CEO of Ocon. This meeting was conducted so that the Deputy Prime Minister hears first-hand the issues concerning the industry from the business leaders themselves, related to the 'the 2nd-phase general measure to enhance the competitiveness of the service industry'.

Actors pay makes it impossible to create good films

The co-president of SidusFNH, Cha Seung-jae, 47, has been appointed chairman of the Korean Film Producers Association. Mr. Cha is considered one of the pioneers who inspired a renaissance in the local film industry. Mr. Cha has produced films that have widespread appeal and a challenging spirit. They include "Beat", "Christmas in August" and "Memories of Murder". SidusFNH was founded by Mr. Cha and its co-president Kim Mi-hee, two years ago and is now the biggest film production company in Korea. Last year, it released 12 films. Mr. Cha spoke about the challenges faced by local production companies.

Q. You have taken on great responsibility at a difficult time.
A. The reduced status of producers is one problem and rising production costs are another. Five years ago, average production costs ranged from 1.5 billion won [$1.6 million] to 2 billion won per film but now they have increased to 3 billion won.

KOFIC announces recipients of Art Film Support

The Korean Film Council has announced the recipients of the 2006 Production Support for Art Films fund. Applications were submitted for 32 live-action feature films and 2 animated feature films, and separate juries selected 4 live-action features and 1 animated feature to receive 400 million won ($430,000) each to help cover production costs.

Dogged Cha Seung-won: Movie "Tears of Blood - Blood Rain"

"He utters the funkiest of lines with a serious face. That's why he's so funny".

That's what the people in the movie business say about Cha Seung-won (35).

Cha is finally trying his hand at a role that suits his serious facial feature although he has firmly established his image as a comical character in movies such as "Kick the Moon" and "Ghost House". He stars in this historical thriller plotted in the 19th century Joseon Dynasty, "Tears of Blood - Blood Rain", as a very logical investigator Won-gyu. Director Kim Dae-seung, whose debut film "Bungee Jumping of Their Own" won both the box-office tickets and the hearts of the critics, took the megaphone for this film.
