[HanCinema's Film Review] "Right Now, Wrong Then" 2015/10/17,
Choon-soo (played by Jeong Jae-yeong) is a well regarded film director on a winter trip to Suwon to give a guest talk about one of his movies. Aside from this one errand, Choon-soo apparently has nothing better to do than wander around cultural sites and eventually strike up a conversation with Hee-jeong (played by Kim Min-hee). As it turns out, Hee-jeong also has nothing better to do with her time than have random conversations with random strangers. Although it probably helps that Choon-soo is a somewhat famous stranger,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "No Tears For The Dead" 2014/06/20,
It's pretty telling that the film's main effective emotional moments make a lot more sense without any kind of context. Take Mo-kyeong (played by Kim Min-hee). She's in pain because of the death of her daughter and husband- especially the former, because Mo-kyeong feels guilty about not being a better parent. This is some strong melodrama here- being a good parent is really hard.
Then we flash back to the main plot, and oh yeah, this is a story about assassins and brotherhood and laundered stock money and battles of honor and techno wizardry and, really, melodrama aside, the action here just gets increasingly and absurdly silly,...More

[HanCinema's Box Office Review] 2013.04.12 - 2013.04.14 2013/04/15,
Korea's love for all things Tom Cruise proves itself once again this week as the Hollywood actor's new film "Oblivion" takes the top spot. The film is based off an unpublished graphic novel from the director Joseph Kosinski ("Tron: Legacy") and Arvid Nelson. Mr. Kosiniski said that the film pays homage to the 1970s and the science fiction films of that era. 530,069 (34%) admissions were enough for the film to hold first position over 638 screenings around the country. The film also stars Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo, Zoë Bell, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The sci-fi genre seems to fit Cruise's acting persona well and the thousands of Korean cinephiles that came out over the weekend to see him in action would not disagree,...More

In addition to Roh Deok first effort, this past week also saw the release of number of new films that managed to keep things interesting during this period of relatively low admissions,...More

Dark Horse Korean Hit at the Gate in the U.S.
LOS ANGELES, CA (April 9, 2012) – CJ Entertainment America is launching the moody Korean thriller "Helpless" on April 20, 2012 as an exclusive engagement for Los Angeles at the CGV Cinemas, with national dates expected for early May. The film was a critical darling and unexpected box office champion for two consecutive weeks when it was released in Korea earlier this year.
- Russell Edwards, Variety
"...The film never ceases to compel. As the layers of deceit are peeled back, Byeon seems in complete command of her material. A key demonstration of her narrative dexterity is the way she flaunts an audacious 'Chinatown'-like clue to the missing woman's whereabouts without pre-empting the climax",...More

'Helpless': director's oversight drags film down 2012/03/08, Source, Lee Seon-gyoon in a scene from "Helpless"
By Kwaak Je-yup
Regardless of a director's competence, poorly adapted screenplays can kill a movie.
"Helpless" (local title: "Hwacha"), Byeon Yeong-joo's newest work in seven years, epitomizes this unfortunate truth, and she only has herself to blame because she also wrote it.
Best known for her acclaimed documentary triptych on comfort women, or the Korean sex slaves during the World War II ("The Murmuring",1995, "Habitual Sadness", 1997 and "My Own Breathing", 1999), Byeon now presents a thriller feature based on best-seller 1992 novel "Kasha" by Japanese novelist Miyuki Miyabe. "I love films about characters with checkered lives, so I thought this role would give me a chance to show what I am capable of as an actress because it fits my style", she said. Not that portraying a character with a complicated life story is an easy task. "The key was being able to express the detailed emotions the protagonist was going through, so I needed to be really focused and communicate my ideas clearly to the director Byeon Yeong-joo", she said,...More

Marked by intrigue and wit, "Moby Dick" paves the way for conspiracy dramas, a genre not yet fully explored in Korean cinema.
Painstakingly realistic depictions of thoroughly domestic matters provide for Hollywood-esque entertainment that invites vested interest, particularly as top actors give their finest performances - but at the same time this deprives the film of that cathartic oomph audiences might expect,...More
